Ponte da Boga Bancales Olvidados 2019

Ribeira Sacra, Galicia, Spain

Elizabeth reviewed this wine:

Ripe blackberry, red plum and a touch of violets on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied, with finely-grained and supple tannins. There's a good amount of fresh acidity as well. More red than black berry elements, with earthy and cocoa notes. A bigger wine than their entry-level Mencia. The weight comes mid-palate, with plenty of depth. Pairing Suggestion: Serve at cellar temperature with grilled octopus, marrow broth or roast beef.

Elizabeth reviewed this wine:

Typistic Sauvignon Blanc aromas of fresh grass, lemon, peach and slate. The medium-weight palate is zesty, with plenty of mouthwatering acidity. Though dry, there is a touch of backend sweetness and the fruit is certainly not austere. Saline minerality dominates the mid-length finish. Pairing Suggestion: Chill lightly and enjoy with white asparagus in a lemon cream sauce, tuna sashimi or roast pork sandwiches with grainy mustard.

Elizabeth reviewed this wine:

More fruit-driven than many Cavas, but with a good amount of yeasty, biscuit notes mingling with the citrus, apple and white flowers. The sea foam mousse is creamy and spritzy, adding complexity to the tangy citrus flavours and stony minerality. Crisp and refreshing with a long, complex finish. Pairing Suggestion: Chill and sip as an aperitif, or serve with freshly shucked oysters Macabeo, Chardonnay

Pie de Monte Finca Las Jarillas

Durigutti Pie de Monte Finca Las Jarillas Malbec 2020

Gualtallary, Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

Elizabeth reviewed this wine:

100% Malbec. Cool temperatures, high altitudes, steep slopes and with limestone soils in certain parts, Gualtallery is a new Southern Hemisphere superstar zone, so it was thrilling to find an arresting Gualtallery Malbec amongst our Best in Show contenders for the second year running. The wine is dark black-purple in colour, with a dense weave of aroma which probably needs a year or two more to resolve itself and show at its best: look out for meat, bacon and leather amongst the gathered black fruits. It's very deep and very pure, by contrast, on the palate: laser-focussed black-plum and sloe fruits with classic Malbec rose petal and tea-leaf overtones. This perfumed purity alone is remarkable testimony to the potential of the terroir. Add the fine-textured tannins, fruit-drenched acidity and sense of stony finesse engraved in the wine and its lingering finish and you'll see that something remarkable is coming to light here. Best in Show. Score - 97. (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2023)
