The Castello di Gabbiano estate is located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany. The historical “castello” dates back from the 12th century but has been restored into a spectacular hotel which includes its own restaurant, a swimming pool, as well as the winery itself and over 100 hectares of vines and olive groves. All the winemaking work is done on the premises so guests also witness the whole process from picking grapes to bottling. Belleza means beauty and this wine is the embodiment of a true Belleza! Only the most sublime grapes from a 9 hectare, high altitude, single vineyard end up in this wine. With a ten to fifteen year ageing potential created by 70 year old vines and impeccable winemaking, the beauty of this wine is seriously “almost” ageless. Deep ruby red in color. Fresh, earthy and opulent on the nose with cranberry compote, stewed strawberry, balsamic vinegar, dried mint, forest flor and dried herb aromas. Dry but very ample on the mouth with muscular tannins and a zingy acidity. Red and black fruit, toasted wood, touch of almond extract, Mexican vanilla and a hint of savouriness. WOW

All the winemaking work is done on the premises so guests also witness the whole process from picking grapes to bottling. The Chianti Classico Riserva is Castello di Gabbiano’s flagship wine, utilizing more than 50% of the estate’s vines. Only the finest grapes were selected for the 2013 vintage. The fruit from different parts of the vineyard were fermented and aged separately which gave winemaker Federico Cerelli an exciting and wide range of flavors as well as textures to create his master blend with. This one includes 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot. Brilliant ruby red in color and a bit subdued on the nose but as oxygen came in contact with the wine, aromas of ripe berry fruit, wet black earth & leaves, crushed black cardamom and a hint of incense came through. Dry and intense on the palate with a luscious, round mouthfeel. Elegant balance of tannin and acidity with ripe red fruit, especially plum mingling with a dense earthiness, a hint of dark spice cake and a lingering finish. Sumptuous

All the winemaking work is done on the premises so guests also witness the whole process from picking grapes to bottling. The Chianti Classico is Castello di Gabbiano’s original wine. Due to soil and terrain variances as well as a different exposure in the “Classico” vineyards, the wine is made to show ageing potential and more complexity than their Chianti. Many rainy days prior to harvest in September of 2014 has somewhat “diluted” this wine’s ageing power, which simply means: “ready to be enjoyed”. It is made from 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot and other red grapes. Shinny ruby red in color, fresh, fruity but subtle nose with juicy red cherries, lovely toasted wood and a slightly vegetal note. Dry, complex and earthy on the palate with a great tannin/acidity balance. Lots of red cherries, hint of smoke and dried herbs with a long finish. Yummy

The roots of the Torres family in the Penedès region of North-Eastern Spain can be traced back to the 17th century. Documents show that even in those days the ancestors of the Torres family were vintners and sold their wines on a small scale. The family tradition has been scrupulously respected down through the centuries and the company has been passed down from father to son. Today, it is run by President Miguel A. Torres, a fourth generation member of the family – with the fifth generation also represented in the company. Bodegas Torres owns a range of vineyards as well as wineries in Spain’s various Denominations of Origin regions as well as in Chile’s Valle Central and California’s Russian River Valley. Their philosophy of winegrowing begins with respect for the land. The family completely avoids the use of chemical treatments, replacing them with biological alternatives, following the viticulture traditions of Torres’ ancestors and has committed itself to reducing CO2 emissions by 30% per bottle by the year 2020. Mas La Plana is a very small vineyard in the Penedes DO where only the most select Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are grown. These are used to make a strictly limited quantities of Torres’ most prestigious red wine also named “Mas La Plana”, now known to connoisseurs all over the world. In the Paris Wine Olympiad, the 1970 vintage triumphed over some of the most famous wines in the world, including a Chateau Latour. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon at its best. Still ruby red in the glass with a little rust color starting to show around the edges. Incredibly fragrant, rich and meaty on the nose with plenty of cassis, dried mint, stewed red fruit, loam and a subtle hint of toasted wood. Still very full, earthy and muscle-y on the palate with chewy tannins and luscious acidity. Generous flavours of dried cherries & cranberries, plum liqueur, dark chocolate mingling perfectly together. Long spicy finish leaving a slightly bitter cacao/espresso aftertaste. This Chianti is made from 90% Sangiovese and blended with Merlot as well as other indigenous grapes. Sugar levels in the Chianti appellation have recently been raised by almost half what they were obligated to be by law so if you are looking for an introduction into this wine-style, or you are a white wine drinker wanting to expand your horizons, this might be the ideal wine to start with. Light ruby in the glass and reminiscent of a Beaujolais Nouveau on the nose with loads of red berry fruit, vanilla yogurt fruit candy and violets. Friendly, fresh and juicy on the palate with just the right balance between fruit and dryness.
