Leonetti Cellar Merlot 2005

Columbia Valley, Washington, United States

Allison & Chris scored this wine: 98/100

Consistently one of our favourite Merlots and the 2005 lived up to our expectations and beyond. At 11 years old, it’s still dark red in colour showing only a slight fade at the rim. Tons of complexity with notes of black cherry, stewed plum, spice, and earth. This is a full bodied Merlot that is big and bold yet incredibly balanced and smooth with a very long finish. The classic description of an “iron fist in a velvet glove” pretty much sums it up.

Absolutely delicious. Fully mature at ten years old but not yet fading. Wonderfully complex with notes of red cherry, cranberry, earth, pepper and vanilla. Medium in body, this wine is soft and smooth but with just enough structure to keep it well in balance. A beautiful example of why Oregon Pinot Noir has such a great reputation.

This is a big, bold, complex wine where the intensity is perfectly balanced and smooth with a very long finish. Dark red in colour, it was showing just the slightest age in the rim. Blackberry, black cherry and plum dominates the aroma while the flavour was a beautiful combination of fruit and wood with secondary notes of spice, earth and leather. Drinking brilliantly now it showed no sign of breaking down.

Huge bouquet that greets your nose well above the glass! Black cherries, and blackberries abound in this full bodied and still somewhat tannic wine. A classic 'iron fist in a velvet glove', this has near perfect balance and comes across as simultaneously structured and plush. Lovely secondary notes of mint and pepper and a very long finish. Not many are in the market of $700 bottles of wine, but if you are, this is one to consider.

A wonderful mix of black cherries and blackberries with hints of vanilla and tobacco coming through on the long finish. A wonderfully hedonistic mouthfeel that is both powerful but seductively soft at the same time. The flavours were intense, which could make you think its medium body was bigger than it was. It was hard not guzzle this wine, it tasted that good! At age 12 it is smooth and polished and likely near peak, where it definitely has the structure to remain for another 5 years and probably another decade.
