Everything about this wine is inviting, from its deep purple colour to its aromas of ripe berries, cherry and spice. Full bodied and well balanced, it pairs well with robust dishes; try lamb chops, burgers or barbecue.

Argentina has received high praise in recent years for the quality and value of their wines. Four-time winner of the IWSC’s trophy for Argentine Wine Producer of the Year, Trapiche is one of the country’s most commercially successful brands. According to their website, they export to more than 80 countries around the globe. Their 2013 cabernet sauvignon is full-bodied, fruity and moderately sweet. Deep ruby in colour, this luscious red has a bouquet of currants, candied fruit, licorice, blackberry and cherry. The wine’s bright, bold flavour makes it easy to drink on its own, or you can pair it with dishes like roasted lamb.

The medieval town of Orvieto, Italy, is famed for its cathedral—or Duomo—with dazzling mosaics and sculptures adorning the façade. Directly across the square from the Duomo you’ll find Enoteca Barberani, a shop owned by the eponymous winery located about 20 minutes outside the city centre. If you can’t make it to the winery itself, you can nip into the store to pick up a bottle of the regional specialty, Orvieto Classico. Vallesanta’s blend (bottled by Barberani) is a dry white with aromas of apple, pear, vanilla and honey. Light bodied with mouth-watering acidity, this wine is best paired with delicate flavours. I’d drink it as a complement to sole or mixed salad with fruit, nuts and cheese. Vallesanta also produces a medium-dry variety, which Barberani recommends drinking after you’ve enjoyed your food—either between courses or when the plates are all cleared away.
