House Wine Co. is from the same Speck Bro. trio who are behind the Henry of Pelham winery in Niagara, Ont. This particular brand of wines positions itself as unpretentious and simple, one that the "everyman" might enjoy. So far, this has been the case for myself with the blends I have tried. The 2012 Cabernet Shiraz is bright purple in colour, sharp on the tongue, and its fruity and oak flavours are prominent. This intensely tangy wine was enjoyed with a semi-soft Oka cheese from Quebec, and the cheeseā€™s subtle, delicate flavour made this an enjoyable pairing.

This is a satisfying, rich VQA wine from a top Niagara Escarpment winery that does not disappoint. My husband and I first tried this on a tour of Henry of Pelham last year. Its fruitiness is apparent in its scent, but it is not overpowering. It is a deep purple-red in colour, and upon first taste, its fruit flavours emerge without being too sweet for the palate. For under $15, this wine is the perfect selection to accompany a savoury meat, pasta dish, or matured cheese. It has been a staple in our home ever since we first tried it, and friends and family enjoy a glass or two when visiting.
