I tasted this wonderful champagne at Louise Roederer Champagne House in Reims, NE France last October. Refreshingly acidic with citrus-lemon flavour, toast and almond notes and subtle yet pronounced bubbles, it's joyful! Easy to find out more about each bottle by checking the traceability number on the label with the Louis Roederer website. The blend is 40% Pinot Noir 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier. This champagne was our choice for New Year's Eve and we paired it with smoked salmon: toasted rye bread spread with cream cheese, topped with smoked salmon, capers, chopped fresh cilantro leaves and freshly squeezed lemon juice. A delicious pairing! Feb 2014 elizabethsvines

My St. Patrick's Day choice is Road 13 Seventy-four K ! Road 13 winery has such a sense of humour about it with the crazy castle wine tasting building that perhaps there's a touch of the blarney somewhere there! Seriously though, I really like Road 13 wines which are made with great care and attention to the soil, the vines and the wine making process. 74K has classic damson plum flavours and I find a touch of chocolate there too. Very enjoyable and smooth to drink. With the structure and texture of this wine it can easily accommodate a meatier meal and I served it with Moussaka - the classic Greek lamb, aubergine, potato, tomato and garlic dish covered with a Mornay sauce. A great pairing with the charm of the Irish!

Switchback Vineyard Raised in Concrete

Haywire Winery Switchback Vineyard Raised in Concrete Pinot Gris 2011

This winery is new to me. A friend gave us this Pinot Gris and I liked it right away. The crisp, fresh, citrus flavours and light weight made it a perfect match for a recent book club event and fuelled a good discussion. Served as a sipping wine it was perfect but also refreshing served with appetizers of smoked salmon, prosciutto ham, and raw veggies. I will look for more wine from Haywire.
