The Stump Jump

d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre 2008

Mclaren Vale, South Australia, Australia

Peter scored this wine: 94/100

I am a big fan of wines from Mclaren Vale, Australia. They reflect the wonderful people and rich culture there, a place where they say the "Vine meets the Sea" and locals say “It's a secret you don't want anyone to know about sometimes...” I can say that this Rhone Valley style blend is a perfect representation of a rich, soft yet flavorsome red that is expected from the McLaren Vale style. It has interesting flavors of plum and I think I would say Mulberry from the Grenache and Mourvèdre that are deepened with the blackberry, spice and white pepper of the Shiraz. Great match for steak, lamb, pork, grilled or done in an asian style.

Benmarco Malbec 2006

Of all the many great Malbecs on the market today, the Ben Marco is a favorite. It is no wonder given the passion that vineyard owner Pedro Marchevsky has for his wines. He got the help of the famous Argentinean wine maker Susana Balbo. I enjoyed the deep purple color and powerful aromas of ripe red fruits and roasted coffee beans, toasted woods. I found it very lush and full- bodied. It was very present on the palate. Chewy, currant jam flavors, clear crisp acidity, and savory finish. Images of outdoor Argentinean grilling drifted through my mind. In fact I am leaving for Buenos Aries in just a few days.

Reserva De Familia

Santa Carolina Reserva De Familia Carmenère 2008

Rapel Valley, Chile

Peter scored this wine: 96/100

This wine is deep and very flavor filled, the deep purple color with red hues is very appealing to the eyes the taste and aroma is rich red and black fruit and spicy accents and an unusual a hint of soy sauce. It has deeper fruit flavor, with an underlying woodiness that adds nicely to the experience. This wine paired beautifully with a nice grilled rib eye rubbed with garlic and rosemary, and a Sesame-Miso Cucumber Salad I made. Please note it really needs time to open, I even suggest decanting for a few hours before drinking to get the full impact of this wine.

Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Marlborough, New Zealand

Peter scored this wine: 95/100

I loved this wine. It is a departure from the overly citric and sharply acidic Sauvignon Blancs that are typical of NZ. It is rich and elegant with flavors of pink grapefruit, passion fruit and pear intertwined with delicious minerality. It is well balanced in flavor and acidity. Each vintage is a little different, the 2009 we tried was very good.

Bin 555

Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Shiraz 2005

South Eastern Australia, Australia

Peter scored this wine: 88/100

I found this wine to be solid with deep plum and strawberry flavors with some pepper and black licorice. It is smooth and balanced, really too much so. It lacks the complexity and bright cherry flavor and sharper acidity I look for in a good Australian Shiraz. It is a great value and if you like medium-bodied Shiraz you may enjoy it. I just did not find it interesting at all.
