Quinta das Apegadas, Sociedade Agrícola, Lda., has only been in operation since 2003, having materialised as a result of its founding partners Cândida and António Amorim’s wishes to invest in the Douro, a region of Portugal which they have always held as one of the country’s most beautiful corners.

They first attempted to settle in the Douro Valley as early as 1990 but, for a variety of reasons, were unable to bring their plans to fruition.

A new opportunity arose in 2000. Many of the former constraints had since been overcome and they managed to go ahead with their plans.

Thus they started Quinta das Apegadas in Cidadelhe, Mesão Frio, on a 3.5-hectare plot with a tiny vineyard. However, thanks to a renovation project, the vineyard was refurbished in 2002.

Subsequently, a chance arose to take a bigger step forward with their acquisition of Quinta Velha, a larger, 14-hectare property located in Canelas, Régua, featuring 10 hectares of vineyards, all rated as A category grapes.

They had long cherished a desire to produce wine, an objective they finally accomplished in 2004, having rented premises to the effect.

Wine made from their 2004 crop started selling by April 2006 and the results were rather promising from the outset.

By 2006, they had built their own cellars at Quinta Velha and started producing wine from the harvest of that same year.

Unquenchable by Natalie MacLean

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
