In 1992, culinary entrepreneur Pat Kuleto assembled five parcels from cattle ranchers to create a 761-acre ranch of wild hillside land on the eastern edge of the Napa Valley. Marrying the eye of a master designer and the heart of a vintner, Pat perceived the vast potential for a world-class vineyard on the mountainous land overlooking Lake Hennessey, Pritchard Hill and the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena. For Pat, the building of his rustically elegant Tuscan-style home, Villa Cucina, and the planting of the surrounding Kuleto Estate vineyards represented the next step in the evolution of a life committed to gracious living and excellence.
In the fall of 2001, Pat and former Campton Place chef Todd Humphries opened Martini House in St. Helena. With a world-class 700-bottle wine list that complements a menu based on the best-loved foods of the wine country, the highlights of Martini House include hand-built fireplaces, signature Kuleto light fixtures, an open staircase that descends into the wine cellar, and outdoor garden seating around a 75-year-old fountain. Close to home, and occasionally acting as an impromptu tasting room for the wines of Kuleto Estate, Martini House invites both locals and visitors to enjoy a quintessential Napa Valley wine and food experience.
Over the years Pat Kuleto’s name has become synonymous with excellence in restaurants, food and wine. A leader in the hospitality field, in 1999 Pat won Bon Appetit's Food and Entertaining Award for Best Designer and was honored the following year by Time magazine as one of the “Top 100 Innovators” in its 2000 Millennium issue. So for the man who claims he was born with a building permit, not a birth certificate, the expectations for his own home and winery ran high.
In 2002 Dave met with Pat Kuleto at Villa Cucina on the Kuleto Estate property. “I came to talk about doing some consulting work,” says Dave. “Pat was looking for someone who loved to be in the vineyard. We ended up sitting on his porch, drinking wine and eating olives and cheese for five or six hours. We talked about the land and winemaking, we talked about what was important to us; about quality of life and feeling connected. For Pat, wine doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it is part of a rich, abundant lifestyle
