Hillside Estate Winery’s legacy began in 1984 when Bohumir and Vera Klokocka replaced the old apricot orchard with grapevines. The first commercial release of a Hillside wine was the 1989 Auxerrois which received Hillside’s first VQA (Vintner’s Quality Alliance) seal of approval.

1996 saw an impressive expansion of Hillside that included a 15,000 square foot timber frame addition to the original farmhouse housing a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and the 160 seat bistro. The impressive 72-foot tower included in the addition dominates the view as you drive north along Naramata Road. The massive structure conceals expanded cellars dug deep into the side of the hill with 22-foot high walls of solid river rock that are three feet thick at the base. The solid stone walls create natural wine cellar temperatures, while the tower serves as a cooling draw that circulates warm air out and pushes cooler air in. The cellar houses stainless steel tanks and racks of French and American oak barrels.

Our estate vineyards are situated on the famous Naramata Bench, an area renowned for its unique terroir. All our vineyards are located on the southwest facing slope above Okanagan Lake and are planted in a mixture of well drained glacial and lacustrine soils. Hillside controls over 40 acres of vineyards contiguous to the winery and also has long term contracts with key growers located in strategic areas throughout the Okanagan. Today we are recognized as an industry leader in the development of varietal clones with concentrated fruit flavour. One of Hillside’s unique features is the vast variety of grapes that grow here and mature to perfection. We grow Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Kerner, Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Syrah.

Our lush vineyards and well-equipped cellar produce top quality, multi award-winning Okanagan wines. Hillside’s wines are different – and very special. “We take the essence of the grape and put it in a glass,” says Co-Proprietor Bill Carpenter. To do that, we allow the grapes to ferment slowly and maintain their fruit forward characteristics; our commitment to quality has been recognized many times throughout North America. Hillside is the only BC winery producing Muscat Ottonel, a truly unique and unusual aromatic white wine, which has developed a large and enthusiastic following. Other exemplary Hillside varietals include Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Merlot, Reserve Merlot, Syrah, and Mosaic (our trademark Bordeaux-style blend.)

Hillside offers a tasting bar in their Wineshop where sampling wine is an education and a pleasure. Bill says, “Our philosophy is that the wines speak for themselves. You don’t have to have a lexicon of adjectives to describe it.”

The Wineshop also prides itself on unique gifts and crafts sourced from local artisans. Our award-winning Bistro offers exceptional, contemporary wine country cuisine and features a
