Gush Etzion, situated in the area belonging to the tribe of Judah, is south of Jerusalem in a mountainous area, and is one of the highest points in altitude in the land of Israel. This district has been renowned for thousands of years for its vine growing and wine production, and is mentioned in the book of Genesis in the Bible in Jacob's blessing to his son Judah.
The climatic conditions, the chalky soil, the difference in temperatures between night and day, the sloping vineyards and the above 900 meter altitude, all combine to make ideal vine growing conditions.
In the middle of the nineties, the Rosenberg family of Efrat renewed the wine producing tradition in the area, and planted vineyards with nearby kibbutzim. Now, in the Gush Etzion area, there are vineyards of different varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, White Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Gewurtztraminer.
With the planting of the vineyards, Shraga Rosenberg began to make wines in his winery in the cellar of his home. The wines received high praise in Israel and in international competitions. In cooperation with the Tishbi winery and an investor from abroad, a boutique winery, with a visitors' center, was built at the Gush Etzion Junction. The visitors' center was designed so that visitors can actually see the different stages of production. A gleaming metal bridge allows visitors an excellent view of the production hall, and through glass windows, one can see the barrels made of oak.
With the production of high-quality wine from the grapes of Gush Etzion, Shraga wishes to combine the old with the new - the ancient vine-growing industry with a modern and enterprising winery. Making wine in Gush Etzion is a continuation of the age-old agricultural tradition, and also the strengthening of the ties to the soil of the land of Israel.
The Visitors' Center also houses a Mehadrin cafe that has a full dairy menu with home made breads, soups, salads, pastas, sandwiches, fresh fish, desserts, and of course all can be paired with a number of our wines. The cafe is open Sunday through Thursday 9:00 am - 11:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, Motzei Shabbat - midnight.
