With their Grand Opening on Memorial Day Weekend 2008, Barrel Oak Winery became Northern Virginia's newest and friendliest family winery. Owners and wine-makers Sharon and Brian Roeder, along with their ever-loving golden retrievers Justice and Barley, are producing quality Virginia red and white wines in a comfortable and unpretentious environment that can be enjoyed by their guests and many friends alike. Barrel Oak Winery is dog -as well as people-friendly and the owners like to call it BOW as in BOW WOW!

The estate-grown varieties include Traminette, Seyval Blanc, Merlot, Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, Petit Verdot, Petit Manseng, Merlot, Viognier and Chardonnay. They also have Virginia grapes from some of the finest surrounding vineyards from which they make a variety of refreshing and lovely wines.

The winery has some of the most breathtaking views in the region, situated just below the Piedmont Blue Ridge across from Little Cobbler Mountain and surrounded by cattle and horse ranches. From BOW's huge stone patio guests can watch the sunsets over the mountains and look over the historic and lovely John Marshall house and barns. Everywhere you turn there is beauty and calm and guests step off the patio directly into the vineyard.

From the moment you enter BOW's tasting room you'll find friendly, accessible, and knowledgeable staff and volunteers ready to help with your exploration and enjoyment. The entire winery is hand-built with underground production facilities where guests take a guided or self-guided tour and see the wine being made in the barrel room, crush pad, and steel tank room. The massive hand-hewn timbers, extensive stonework, enormous cedar doors, and huge stone fireplace attest to the care given to every detail. Meanwhile, the entire building has been built green with state-of-the-art facilities and building standards such as a new geothermal heating and cooling system, low energy lighting and engineered insulating panels throughout.

The wines are very good and easy to enjoy on the stone patio or with friends at home, revealing the distinctive style and tasteful complexity of Northern Virginia's unique terroir. Every vintage has a story and the staff is very happy to share the day with each and every visitor. They also have a large selection of lovely and unique gifts as well as food items to accompany your wine selection. Guests are encouraged to stroll the vineyards or bring a picnic. The staff is also happy to direct visitors to other area wineries such as Three Fox, Pearmund, Chateau O'Brien, Miracle Valley, and Vintage Ridge; all within a few miles. There are also several wonderful and distinctive restaurants and B&Bs that the folks at Barrel Oak will help you to find if you wish to make your day into a weekend.

On the weekends there will often be live entertainment and mornings they'll have a paper and a complimentary cup of coffee for those who arrive early. They also often host charitable fundraisers and host the very occasional wedding in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable. Picnics, tour buses, and limos are welcome, but please call ahead to make special arrangements.

Natalie MacLean is a new force in the wine writing world ‐ a feisty North American answer to Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson. She can write beautifully about wine.

The Financial Times of London

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
