This robust Australian red wine appeals from the get-go. On the nose, fleshy ripe black plums and spice. On the palate satin smooth. This full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is made by such a dependably great producer! Even when the reds are big and brooding they still have a palate lift and vibrancy at their heart. Loaded with blackberry, blackcurrant and berries. Pair with roast beef. Highly recommended.

Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: roast duck, roast partridge, cheesy pizza.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Yalubma - The Cigar 2012 - Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Named after the cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil that comprises Coonawarra - this wine shows layers of delicious dark berry fruit, blackberry, with bell pepper and expressive menthol herbal notes. Great structure, with fine integrated tannins that command a premium grilled steak and will evolve well over the next decade. Enjoy 2017-2027+. Tasted January 2017. 92 points. Yalumba has long had a mandate to craft exceptional quality wines that are accessible to wine lovers around the world. With this in mind, we set out to create younger siblings for two of our Rare & Fine stalwarts. Yalumba The Cigar Cabernet Sauvignon is the youthful interpretation of our beloved Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon, showcasing the exceptional fruit to be found in its Coonawarra home.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS
Good winter rains replenished soil moisture level and an early burst of warm weather initiated bud-burst a few weeks earlier than normal. Shoot growth proceeded rapidly and the early head start was maintained through November and December. January and February were dry so our winemaker and vineyard manager had few concerns and held high expectations for the vintage. Their hopes were realised and the grapes reached full ripeness and maturity easily. Harvest was completed by March 30.

WINEMAKING/VITICULTURE
Yalumba The Cigar is made through traditional small lot winemaking techniques. The grapes are crushed to small static fermenters, ensuring good extraction of colour and tannin. The grapes stay on skins for around seven days, though some tanks are given extended skin contact before pressing. The wine is matured for 22 months in mainly French oak hogsheads and barriques; 28 per cent of them new, the balance being older French and American hogsheads and barriques.

TASTING NOTES
This wine has a full nose with intense savoury blackcurrant fruit and chocolate-cherry highlights. The wine’s palate shows a warmer vintage and opens with cassis and ripe cherries. There are layers of plum and cherry fruit entwined with middle weight tannins, giving a lengthy savoury textured finish.

WINEMAKER: Peter Gambetta

From Coonawarra's mysterious terra rossa strip, Yalumba Winery's The Cigar is a robust and big-shouldered Cabernet Sauvignon typical of the full-bodied and spicy Cabernet Sauvignons that are produced from this area. Like most other vintages of this wine, the 2012 vintage will probably sell out early as well. - Community Wine Reviews
