A cult Italian wine dubbed one of the Super Tuscans for breaking away from traditional Italian winemaking rules to create blends that eventually became more coveted and expensive than the highest classified wines in the country. Eventually, this winery was granted its very own DOC or appellation in recognition of its quality. The 2013 vintage was a spectacular one, and this wine has a long life ahead of it. Aromas of black fruit, smoke, dark spice and pencil led. Pair with rare filet mignon. Sassicaia has had a cult following since 1974 when a six year old vintage of the wine beat various coveted Bordeaux wines in a Decanter competition. Produced by Tenuta San Guido, this flagship Italian red wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc grapes. Long, elegant finish.

Food pairings: filet mignon, pork tenderloin, pizza, pasta, hard cheese.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 95/100 with the following review:

Always a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Sassicaia has a long enjoyed a cult-like following as it's regarded as one of the world’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignon blends outside of Bordeaux's left-bank 1er Crus. The 2013 is an exceptional one showing the greatness that can be achieved from this iconic winery. Dark fruit, dried fruit, balsamic, cedar, and sweet spice on the nose and palate. Full flavoured with delicate mouth coating tannins and refreshing acidity providing an ideal texture for this prized Super Tuscan. The finish is long with more dried fruit, balsamic and cedar notes. Certainly a wine for the ages. Tasted November 2016. 95 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Made from 85% Cab Sauv and 15% Cab Franc; aged 24 mos in oak barriques and further 6 mos. in bottle.
A fragrant and luxuriously complex red with layers of dark plums, dried fruit, chocolate, spice, smoke and leather. Superb structure and soft tannins. Caresses the mouth, so savour the finish and don't rush as you enjoy this one. Will age well for up to 10 years. Would make a very special gift.

Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Magnificent! There is a very good reason behind why this iconic wine holds consistently high praises. Aside from all its visionary attributes, this wine shows incredible complexity, superb balance, and nuances that linger on and on. Aromas include floral notes (roses and violets), cherry, dates, dark chocolate and spice. This full-bodied Tuscan red blend shows tangy acidity, satiny smooth tannins (med-low), developing fruit concentration, and a long anise spice finish. A terrific collector's item for any wine aficionado. Tasted Nov 2016 - @sommsosa | bespoketastings.ca
Produced by Tenuta San Guido, this flagship Italian red wine made from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc grapes. If you are drinking this beautiful red now, decant for a couple of hours prior to serving. Otherwise cellar for five to 10 years when it will be at its best. - Community Wine Reviews
