An attractive red wine made from an obscure red grape that's often part of Bordeaux blends to add colour and heft. Aromas of dark fruit and a savoury mid-palate note. A good grip on the palate, so decant 1 hour. You can't beat the price for the quality. Curious about Petit Verdot as a grape and wine? No better way to understand it than to try it as a stand-alone wine like this one rather than in a blend. Try it with meat lasagne.

Petit Verdot food pairings: three cheese pizza, pasta and rich tomatoe sauce, pork sausage cassoulet.

Reviews and Ratings

Wineboy rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Somewhat less aromatic than I might wish, it too offers medium power weight. What I liked was it offers a nice value introduction to the varietal PV. It reminds me of a CS but more aromatic. While some PV can have high levels of tannins, another year in bottle for this wine has rewarded us with a much smoother wine than in it's youth.
Petit Verdot is a grape usually employed in a blended wine to give body, structure and colour. It's one of those brush-your-teeth-after-you-drink black grapes for red wine. But the Santa Carolina Winery in the Rapel Valley has been in operation for 140 years and with that, a lot of experience with various grapes. The wine is naturally full-bodied with firm tannins, but some lovely savoury, dark fruit and refreshing acidity to match on the palate and finishes with cedar, vanilla and dried herbs lingering on. Decant for an hour prior to serving. Have it with aged beef, a perfect pairing for such a dark-hearted wine. - Community Wine Reviews
