Lavish fleshy ripe cherry aromas and flavours yet not simple or sweet. Complex, elegant and layered. Some dark spice on the finish. Silk texture. Chapter three of my second book (Unquenchable) includes a visit to this winery and dinner with the brilliant Anthony Hamilton Russell.

Dry food pairings: lamb kabobs, venison burgers, roast veal, beef carpaccio.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Zen-like expression from a wine region that lives up to it's name: Heaven on Earth. Walker Bay is receiving a lot more attention for their focus on cooler climate Chard and Pinot. Ageable stuff. Lifted notes of dirty rose, slightly overripe red fruit, cream, chocolate, earth. It is well crafted and well worth seeking out. Prices for this wine are soaring. Try it before Jay-Z or Brangelina buys it!
Surely one of South Africa's finest Pinot Noir producers! Hamilton-Russell leads the way in the country for cool-climate viticulture and racy, exciting wines. Sophisticated and complex, but extremely easy to drink. The 2013 vintage of this South African red wine enjoyed a long hang time so the grapes ripened to perfection with cool temperatures during the ripening season, even ripening with good tannin structure. The tannins are so silky," according to the winemaker. The 2013 crop was about one quarter smaller than 2012. The grapes were hand-picked starting February 10, which was later than the 2012 vintage. This is easy to mistake for a top shelf Burgundian Pinot. - Community Wine Reviews
