A savoury, rich, full-bodied southern French red wine with mouth-watering flavours of black cherry and dried herbs. Lovely texture, mouth-filling and smooth. Great value for the price. Pair with roast beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This estate belongs to an historic family that has been in the Rhone Valley since the eighteenth century. The Domaine de Vieux Lazaret was a local hospital before it made delicious wines.
Domaine du Vieux Lazaret, as a blend, is typically mostly Grenache. In support, it's usually got asignificant portion of Shiraz, Mourvedre, and Cinsault.
The colour is a beautiful deep ruby, with some bricking.
Southern Rhone wines, like this one, are usually said to have a distinctive garrigue (dried scrub herb) smell to them. This one certainly has this; along with cherry coulis, licorice, leather, and a lot of blackberry.
The oak is balanced and integrated. The alcohol is not too out of kilter for something this ripe. Full bodied flavours of dried herbs, blackberry, cherry, and a gamey or sanguinary note. It's actually quite savoury on the finish.
This is textbook Chateuneuf. It's complex, suave, and ageworthy. Put it alongside coffee rubbed t-bones, or a traditional cassoulet.
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

At $45 for a magnum of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape (from the Rhône valley in France), well, you just can't beat it! Medium ruby red, sweet baking spices, field berries, plum, herbs, and floral notes one nose. Medium-bodied and very approachable, it's primed and ready for immediate enjoyment. A great wine for holiday gatherings, it's versatile and friendly, making it well suited for just about any dish you'd like to enjoy with it over the fall and winter. Tasted November 2015. 89 points. This Rhone red wine offers notes of dark red fruit and spices. Domaine du Vieux Lazaret is owned by the Quiot family who have been living in the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for almost 300 years. The winery is named for the seventeenth century hospital, which is now the winery's head office. The cellars, in the heart of the village, have been built around vats that were dug out of the rock and are still in use. This is a traditional blend of 13 grapes grown on vines planted in the classic rolled pebbles and influenced by the mistral wind. Pair with game meats. - Community Wine Reviews
