Reviews and Ratings

Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

2013 weather was ideal for the vines to ripen, warm and consistent throughout the long season. Pure fruit expression was obtained through use of a state-of-the-art system for removing grapes from stems and leaves. Aged in French and American oak, 60 % new, for 16 months. Wine shows ripe strawberry aromas with dark cherry on palate, dusty tannins and touch of mint on finish.
Tasted at #CSM50, June 2017 at Social Restaurant
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Black cherry, black plum skin, cocoa powder, crushed flowers and a touch of spice are the hallmarks of this Merlot. This needs 5-7 years to really show its stuff. Good now, probably better later. Reminds me of 2010 Fronsac. 91 Points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Tasting this lovely 2013 Merlot next to a more mature 2005 version really emphasized the youthful characteristics of this wine and showed this has the potential to age for a while yet. Still, it was very nice in its present form, showing some luscious ripe currants and berry flavour and some soft white pepper on the palate. Tannins are youthful but soft. Enjoy now after decanting for at least half an hour, and you could cellar for 5-10 years. Try this with any beef dish, from tartare to a nicely grilled steak.
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Quite old world esque, with grilled pepper, plum, sous bois on the nose and palate with spicy plum lingering on the finish. Tasted June 2017. 90 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This was the 13th Vintage that Head Winemaker Bob Bertheau has made of the Canoe Ridge Merlot. With the help of a warm long growing season in 2013 he clearly shows he knows what do do with this grape.

Still young it has fresh juicy aromas of black cherries and spice. The oak (French and American) was 60% new so this wine could use some time to tame them and the tannins down. After some time in the glass it started to open up with additional aromas of caramel and vanilla. Flavours of fresh dark fruit; blueberry, black currant and cherries nicely balanced with some fresh acidity.

This paired nicely with a course of beef Tartare garnished with corn nuts, purple mustard and accompanied with potato chips.
