Natalie's Score: 92/100

After two hours open in the glass, this wine transformed: far more aromatic than on first opening and the tannins smoothed out considerably. My score is based on that more open wine. This traditional Bordeaux blend has Merlot (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), Cabernet France (3%) and Petit Verdot (2%) grapes. Although Merlot leads in the blend, this is not a far Merlot, but rather a well-structured one. The wine is aged in oak, but only 20% is new so as not to impart heavy oak notes. Classic aromas of cassis and black currant with some pepper and smoke on the nose, palate and long finish. The 2012 vintage was a strong one and it shows in this value-priced Bordeaux. The vines are planted in calcerous-clay soils. Superb balance, depth and freshness. Pair with prime rib or a rare steak.

Food pairings: prime rib roast rare, New York strip loin steak, Porterhouse veal chops.

Reviews and Ratings

Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Located in the heart of Bordeaux in the Bordeaux Supérieur region, the Château Pey La Tour 2015, presents heady sweet and spicy aromas (read: cigar box), with a long peppery finish. This is one of those wines you keep going back to, as it continues to soften, open up and present more of those sweet spice characteristics in the glass. The soft texture and sweet aromas make this a perfect “beginners’ Bordeaux” for those who are more accustomed to new world wine and want to dip their toe in Bordeaux country.
Tasted April 2017.
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A Merlot from France's Bordeaux Supérieur appellation, blended with tiny quantities of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot to add power and structure. Delightful palate of cherries, raspberries, spice and oak with good acidity. Blossoms nicely, becoming more aromatic after an hour, so decant before serving with beef or veal. A very enjoyable entry-level Bordeaux.

Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This is a great value red from the heart of the Bordeaux Superior Appellation. Chateau Pey La Tour has 176 ha under vine planted with 94% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petite Verdot. This is one of the biggest properties of Bordeaux Dourthe and has been in their portfolio since 1919. Initially the aromas were a bit green but this is a wine that definitely evolved as it opened up. Light smoke, cigar, spice and black cherry aromas. A good balance of acidity and tannins and a long oak finish. On my last purchase of this wine I bought two bottles, 1 to go in the beef bourguignon for Sunday supper and the other to accompany the meal! Tasted April 13, 2017.
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Amazing value red from the Bordeaux Superior Appellation! Cassis, black pepper, smoke, violet and dark plum. Decant 1-2 hours prior to enjoying.
Sylvain Segard rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

A traditional Right Bank Bordeaux blend of 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot for an extra zing of acidity. Deep robe with bright ruby hue. The characteristic Bordeaux aromas with notes of cassis, black currants, mint, white pepper, and a hint of smoke. These aromas repeat on the palate with the smokiness taking on more of a charcuterie flavour. A very solid buy for this price. It will pair well with roast beef, but decant the bottle at least 30 minutes before serving. Score 89. (S.Segard, reviewed April 2017)
Nicole Lewis rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Much of what we seek in Right Bank Bordeaux for less than $20! This wine will be released in Ontario in October. On the nose at first restrained and gradually opening up with time offering up aromas of cherry, violets, tobacco, camp fire and white pepper. Definitely decant this medium-bodied wine 1 - 2 hours prior to serving. Pair with sanglier.
Excellent quality to price ratio!

Tasted in Schott Zwiesel glasses on April 13, 2017
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

There is lots of black pepper, black cherry, plum skin, dried flowers, and a hint of leather. 89 points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)
Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

A super entry-level Bordeaux to have on hand for any occasion. Ripe cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, gentle spice, condensed tannins - kind of "textbook" - but rather enjoyable, especially at this price. Very versatile, try it with stacked grilled vegetable salad with a good balsamic drizzle.
David Skinner rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby and a pink rim.Dark fruit nose with plenty of cherry, plum and a touch of cassis. Full bodied with supple tannins and a nice acidity. More dark fruit on the palate and on the lengthy finish.

Serve with a nice oxtail and truffle pottage.
Melanie Aubert rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This Château is Dourthe’s largest property, and this is the label one you are most likely to see at the liquor store. On the nose, you get lots of black cherry, tobacco, smoke and eucalyptus. Aged in classic bordelais barrels (called a barrique, which holds 225 L), this wine has solid tannins, so could be cellared for a couple of years. On the palate, raspberry, black cherry and cedar are the main flavour components. This merlot-based red blend is currently available at the SAQ and will be at the LCBO as part of a September Vintages release. Serve with roast beef or grilled steak.

From the Bordeaux wine region, Chateau Pey La Tour Reserve du Chateau (2012) is a red Bordeaux wine blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in oak with only 20% being new French oak. This wine is elegant with juicy blackberry fruit and great value at this price point. - Community Wine Reviews
