This superb Bordeaux from the strong 2012 vintage is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes grown in Cadillac to the south of Bordeaux with vines planted in an ampitheatre. It's aged in 400-litre barrels, the larger size so as not to impart heavy oak flavours. This wine is deep, dark and concentrated, a great expression of its terroir and an exceptional value for the price. Spicy finish. Decant 1-2 hours. Pair with a rare steak.

A blend of mainly Merlot(90%) with small quantities of Cab Sauv and Petit Verdot, made from grapes grown on clay-limestone soil. Aromas of strawberry, cherry and a hint of licorice develop into a rich palate giving plum, dark fruit, ripe cassis and spice. Rounded tannins, food-friendly acidity and a savoury finish on this rich wine that gives an impression of freshness throughout. One of my (several) favourites at the Dourthe luncheon.

Chateau de Ricaud, This vineyard, south of Bordeaux, near Cadillac, was obtained by Dourthe Wines in 1980 and they uprooted many vines to increase the quality of the estate. This is evident in this lovely deep ruby offering. On the nose there was evidence of earthy elements, cherries and violets. In the mouth: oh yeah! ripe cherry, raspberry, sour cherry, lively, forest loam, and cigar box. This is a medium bodied, high acidity and balanced with subtle cherry fruit character.
Aged - 400 L barrels so that the oak elements gently supporting the structure of this The finish is tart but moderated with cherry and cigar box replaying. Pair with lamb stew.

Great value for the price. More herbaceous and spicy notes on this primarily Merlot - Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Lots of blackberry, green herb notes and black pepper. Medium+ finish. Nice balance of fruit and spice on the palate. Decant for one hour before serving and serve with a nice prime rib.

Medium to dark ruby in colour with a purple hue. Pleasant aromas of red fruits, white pepper, and oakwood. This wine is dry, moderately tannic, and has a juicy mouthfeel. There is a bit of green pepper flavour upon entry, but the palate is immediately rounded with cherry and blackberry flavours of medium intensity, and also some baking spices and cocoa bitterness. Medium ruby and a pink rim. Cherry, smoke, cedar and some pepper on the nose. Delicate fragrance. On the palate this wine features cherry, blackberry and toasty barrel nuances. Full bodied and firm tannins that are well integrated. A medium length finish.

Try pairing this with caramelized onions and black olive tapenade on a toasted baguette.

This estate, near Sauternes, grows 90% merlot, 8% cabernet sauvignon and 2% petit verdot. All these grapes go into the Château de Ricaud, which effuses aromas of cherry, smoke, cedar and hint of gaminess. It is aged in large, 400-liter barrels, which limits the oak exposure. As a result, the mouthfeel is only slightly drying, but still provides good structure. Open up this bottle a couple of hours before dinner and decant, then pair with hearty beef stew.
