This robust, well-priced French red wine comes to us via Philip Grant, Propriétaire. The wine is mostly made from the Negrette grape and offers lip-smacking delicious flavours of dark fruit and cedar brush. Decant 1 hours and try it with a juicy steak tonight.

Food pairings: winter stew, rare cuts of meat, Olivier salad.

Earthy forest floor aromas layered with smoky blackberry and black pepper. The flavour is juicy black and red fruits with a velvety mouth feel. It has an exceptionally long tar black cherry finish. This wine pulls of both rustic and classy at the same time.

Ripe dark fruit aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and cherry are balanced by the freshness of mint/eucalyptus, cedar, and a touch of menthol. There is also some black pepper, baking spices, sweet black olive, and forest floor. On the palate the ripe fruit repeats (but the cherry is prominent), along with coffee, black pepper, cedar, green bell pepper, and an intriguing cured meat note. Great presence and structure, with medium-high acidity and tannins. Decent length, finishing with blackberry, dark cherry, black pepper, and mocha. A Steal at the price! Features the Negrette grape.

Priya: Smells like it would be on the dry side and I'm right. Still has some jamminess but without the sweetness so more like a concentrated fruit flavor. Quite nice - though it wasn't a great match for the pasta in tomato sauce we drank it with. 86 pts

Alex: Nah it wasn't a good match, this wine is too big and dark for a simple tomato pasta - that's where a chianti comes in! Nevertheless this a fantastic wine at $13.95, complex and savoury on the nose with fine depth, harmony and length on the palate. Very dark-fruited, brambly blackberries and plums, leather notes, mothballs, violets and pepper to the nose. Black fruited in the mouth with a glossy texture, hints of cocoa and dustings of violet and black olive. The syrah really makes its presence known, though this blend is well put together all around. Finishes plush and spicy, you're better off putting this to barbequed pork chops in a balsamic glaze. A steal of a wine! 90 pts

Deep ruby/garnet, this blend of Cab Sauv, Cab Franc and Syrah from the south of France shows cherry, plum and green herb and some vanilla/oak on the nose. Some tartness here with sour cherry, pepper, and green notes carry on to the palate along with some fine grippy tannin. Tasted April 2015
