Tannic and warm Spanish red wine, with black fruit, toasty oak and layers of mouth-watering juiciness. This is a Spanish red wine blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes. The wine was aged for 18 months in barrel and another 20 months in bottle before being released from the winery. Pair with rack of lamb.

Food pairings: blackened leg of lamb, spicy meat dishes, beef tenderloin.

Full bodied and a lot of flavour. This is definitely a BBQ wine for me. Aromas of smoke, pepper, dark plums and cedar. Tannins are grippy but not overwhelming, and mellow after decanting. Perfect with a pepper steak, marinated flank steak, or spicy pork sausages on the grill.

Dark ruby red, bordering on opaque. On the nose, aromatic black cherry and other dark fruit, as well as tobacco, cedar and sweet spice. At first sip, holy tannins! Let this one breathe for at least an hour. It is very grippy with equally high acidity, for a simultaneous drying yet mouthwatering sensation. This full-bodied red boasts red cherry and berries, clove, herbs, cedar and some minerality on the palate. I quite enjoyed drinking this rioja with beef stew, but think it would go very nicely with any grilled red meat. It could also stand to be aged for a few more years, which would help take that tannin-y edge off and bring out more of the fruit. Tasted January 2016.

A very nice Rioja whose complexity comes out with food. Well worth a try…

Presentation: A classic looking label and bottle. Nothing to write home about, but nothing off-putting, either
Appearance: Medium ruby red
Nose: Blueberries, plums, earth, vanilla
Taste: leather, plums, blueberries, earth, tannic, at least early on, chocolate, tobacco. Strong on the alcohol. Earthy when tasted by itself, but paired very well, with notes of black pepper emerging, with BBQ steak and roasted garlic potatoes. I particularly appreciated the blend of the fruit and earth.
Finish: earth, tobacco, tannic.
Overall impression: A nice, affordable Rioja, which is definitely worth a try.

Value: 4 out of 5
