This robust Italian red wine made from the Aglianico grape in Taurasi offers lots of pleasure. Racy acidity for a tangy tomato or meat sauce. Wines from this region or often nicknamed Barolo of the South. Aromas of dark fruit, toasty oak, and smoke. Pair with grilled meats.

Food pairings: roast chicken, grilled veal chops, meat salads.

Reviews and Ratings

Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

On the nose, this wine is quite complex with aromas of dark fruit, rose petals, sweet spice, honey, and subtle wood notes. On the palate, there is dark fruit, floral notes, and a long dark chocolate finish. It is full-bodied with great acidity and noticeable tannins. Pair with braised beef.

Tasted July 2018
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Medium ruby colour with a glistening shiny garnet hue on the edge. The bouquet starts off firm but opens up with black cherries, red currants, rose petals, dark chocolate and leather bound library dusted books. Flavours reveal bing cherries, fresh bay leaf herbs and smoked spicy paprika touches at the end. Acidity flourishes with broad tannins and a well balanced body. Pair with bresaola antipasti or medium bodied cheeses. 89 points - tasted July 2018
Luc Delorme rated this wine as 84/100 with the following review:

This wine opens up on the nose with a candied, almost artificial fruit aroma mixed in with an earthiness that creates a profile that is unique.

The slightly sweet, candied, almost artificial fruit continues on the palate, accompanied by peppery secondary notes. Mouthfeel is smooth and round, and there is enough acidity and tannin to ensure good structure.

This wine will not likely be a wide-appeal crowd-pleaser, but for those that like the candies fruit profile, this wine is well structured and well-balanced.
Antica Hirpinia 2010 is a medium-plus bodied Aglianico from the Taurasi wine region. Taurasi is often referred to as the Barolo of the south. Look for rich plum, black cherry and cake spice flavours on the palate with tobacco leaf and great acidity for food. Grilled lamb chops please. - Community Wine Reviews
