Mint, cigar box, gorgeous, medium intensity red berry fruit.

Wakefield's St. Andrew Shiras 2012 is a single vineyard wine from the iconic St. Andrews vineyard. The fruit is ripe, bright, fresh black currant, a mouthful of black cherries and white pepper on the palate; acidity and fruit are in balance, and while the wine gives a lovely mouth feel with some added spice, most noticeable on this wine is its soft, rounded, almost velvet tannins that may well have to do with the open barrel fermentation process employed for some of it. Best food mate is a roast leg of lamb or bison ribs on the barbie.
Mymi Thesingingsommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

The Wakefield journey started in the 1950s when the South Australian Wine Distributors company was formed.
Motivated by the great ‘old world winemakers, and in particular Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the Taylor family behind Wakefield set out to find the perfect piece of land in Australia to establish a vineyard in the family name.
They finally found the perfect place in 1969; a 178 hectare site by the Wakefield river in the Clare Valley. With certain terra rossa soil (red brown loam over limestone) proving conducive to crafting wines of great quality, the journey began!
And why the seahorse logo? During excavation of the vineyard dam, fossilized remains of tiny seahorses were found in the limestone bedrock, confirming that the land had once been the bed of an ancient inland sea so it seemed only natural for the seahorse to represent their wines!
This Shiraz hails entirely from the iconic St Andrews vineyard, Block A30 and as their flagship, the St Andrews wines are only released in the finest vintages.
In the glass, it is a deep dark ruby color with great legs!
The nose is expressive and full of black berries, plums, spice and tobacco.
On the palate, it is robust and voluptuous. Dry with a hint of residual sugar and flavors of dark chocolate, ripe blackberries, juicy plum compote, vanilla, masala spice and a touch of oak. Tannic backbone masked by a great core of acidity. Plenty of Old World finesse…
Stunning!
This wine will be the perfect companion to the most sumptuous slow cooked roasts, lamb, beef, veal or any game bird!!!
