This was my weekend wine pick: an amazing red wine from South Africa with an interesting fun blend of 39% Shiraz, 34% grenache, 15% mourvedre, 9% cinsault ans 3% carignan. Creative fun label. 13.5% alcohol. Paired well with grilled chicken salad. Fun story as it was named for a wandering dog. 50% profits back to hands that make it. How could we not have been drawn to this wine? The label and cork showcase a dog that looks strangely like our Birdy - and reads ‘named for a Wandering Dog who led us 6 days & 100 miles hiking across South Africa’s wild coast...’. The locals named this dog Lubanzi and the story of how this wine came about is a lovely read of adventure, travels, the wandering dog Lubanzi and wanting to give back to a country the winemakers fell in love with.
It happens to all of us (let’s be honest): the draw of a label. Further reading reveals tiny words and sayings all over the bottle, some so small around the two maps that you would need a magnifying glass to read them, and others visible for our delight: ‘adventure favors the curious’, ‘utopia’, ‘the thing that happens when you go someplace new is that the familiar follows you in the most surprising ways’ and our favourite: ‘We hope our wine helps you make a home in the newest places, & an adventure out of the home you know by heart.’. Beyond these sayings, this wine is ‘fair for life’ fair trade certified, certified B-Corp and 50% of profits are given back to the hands that make this wine.
A bold and complex mix of 39% shiraz, 34% grenache, 15% mourvèdre, 9% cinsault and 3% carignan, this is a wine for cool days and warm sweaters. It’s lush and deep, in colour (dark ruby), nose (spice, earth, coffee, ripe fruit) and taste (dark fruit initially that tapers off to berries and finishes with a touch of spice. Despite the mix of varietals, colour and nose - which presaged a ‘not for the faint of heart’ wine, we were happily surprised by the overall balanced taste, tannins and acidity.
