I'm not sure I've ever had a Pinot Gris at 15.8% ABV, but this one was quite balanced, and I didn't even notice until the finish! Aromas are tropical and citrus, with some melon and grapefruit, along with lemon zest and a hint of hazelnut. Full bodied, bright and crisp acidity, and vibrant fruit on the palate. The finish is lengthy and a bit hot, but if you pair this with a nice roasted chicken, everything will come into balance. Cheers!

This unusual Pinot Gris comes from a small boutique family owned winery in Oliver, B.C. and is produced in small lots. Their website states "Small is the new Big" which is a good label for this 2015 vintage. Citrus aromas, predominantly grapefruit with some underlying tropical notes. Flavours of lemon and grapefruit with crisp acidity. It finishes a bit hot - but that's understandable given the abv is 15%. Pair with grilled chicken or pork tenderloin.

Interesting Pinot Gris out of BC. Subtle notes of melon and citrus. Decent acidity. High alcohol content (15.8%) leads to a warm finish and minimizes fruit flavours. Tasted July 2018.

Go west my friends! Oliver, British Columbia, Canada to be exact, where you will happen upon vinAmite winery, and one exquisite Pinot Gris. This 2015 vintage boasts aromas of Red Delicious apple, lime zest and pine nuts. A velvet mouth feel, and a zippy lemon finish. At 15.8% abv the legs on this one keep going and going!
Beautiful with grilled salmon or margherita pizza.
Tasted June 2018.

Between Road 5 and Road 6 on Highway 97 in Oliver, vinAmité is “Hiding in Plain Sight”. Some may know, or recall the winery by its former name of vinPerdue (wine lost), but in 2016, this sustainably-farmed family winery had a name change to vinAmité (wine harmony and friendship). I like the latter and it seems the winery likes it as well. Indeed, vinAmité’s Pinot Gris and Chanson d’amour are very friendly and easy to drink whites.
On the nose, the Pinot Gris is green apple and pear with light tropical fruit, citrus and light nut notes. Pale lemon in the glass, on the palate the wine is crisp with melon, apple and light tropical, citrus flavours wrapped up in a zesty acidity. At 15% plus abv, pair with food - a grilled pork tenderloin accompanied with a pear-apple sauce will do the trick nicely. (109 cases made).
