Surprising longevity from an underdog grape in Niagara. Lailey have been head turners in Niagara for working miracles on varietals that need longer seasons than Niagara can consistently provide - Syrah and Cab, most significantly. This one has kept really well. Still alive and drinking well.
It's extremely unlikely that you'll encounter this again. Lailey is now planted for icewine only and their winemaker has moved on to Karlo, in Prince Edward County. If you have a chance to acquire some, do it!
Dark garnet, with some sediment on the bottom of the bottle (sediment is not a negative feature - especially in such an old wine).
Aromas and flavours bleed together and become less distinct but more integrated in an old wine. In this wine, the aromas have some brooding campfire, bell pepper, graphite, mushroom, petunia, forest floor, cherry, blackberry confiture, amd chocolate cream.
The palate is dominated by more savoury flavours. Roasted pepper, smokiness, earth, red and black fruit, cocoa dust, and dried tobacco.
Be very gentle with old wines, like this. A decanter is a good call to catch sediment and to allow it to breathe a bit.
Pair this with simple, but decadent fare - cured meats, meaty olives, fresh figs, and table grapes or berries.
