The Laughing Magpie 2012, a Shiraz and Viognier blend, delivers earthy and prune aromas as well as a touch of oak. It is a powerful full-bodied dry red with a hint of residual sugar, fresh acidity and firm tannins. After letting it breathe for 30 minutes in a carafe, the tannins were much smoother and allowed to better taste the prune, fig and pepper flavors. Still young, this wine can be cellared for a few years.

Wineboy rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

This isn't the best vintage for this wine. Tight young tannins, Overly oaked for the level of fruit. Although having loved earlier vintages of this wine, this one is not a $30 wine in my mind.
Jane Staples rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

A Shiraz-Viognier blend from Mclaren Vale, S Australia. Dark garnet with highly fragrant raspberry/blackberry jam aromatics. Plum, raspberry, sweet spice and cedar on mouth-watering palate. Delicious to last the drop! Multiple gold medal-winner and it's easy to see why. Enjoy with your next steak or roast duck.

Natalie's Review

d'Arenberg The Laughing Magpie Shiraz Viognier 2012, Mclaren Vale, South Australia, Australia: So damn delicious! Chester Osborn is a crazy genius with big red wines. Small batches of grapes are gently crushed with foot-treading happening on two-thirds of them. Juicy and full-bodied with a savoury, mouth-watering core that goes on forever. Aromas of fleshy black plums. Pair with grilled meats. Drink: 2017-2021. 936971 14.40% D 750 mL  $29.95 Score: 94/100. May 12, 2018 Top Rated Red Wine. Best Beef Wine  Full Review
