The LCBO must have bought a lot of this to get this low a price. Blackberries and resinous oak are the two dominant aromas. Some smoothing tannins means you could age this but with it's nice glycerine mouthfeel it would call my name from the basement. For me the oak/fruit balance was perfect - for a Spanish wine. Great length of flavours. I'm buying some.

Lots of ripe red fruit here, along with leather, herb, spice, and fresh tobacco. A lovely expression of the varietal. 89 Points. (www.ottawawinejournal.com)

Deep cherry color. Tastes of strawberries, cherries, a bit of vegetal/herbaceous notes, plus tobacco and oak. Slight grippy texture. Fresh and tasty flavours. Leathery, black-fruit, berry flavors that taste roasted and come with a little burn. The finish drops of a little.

A very good QPR rioja. The palate is round with black cherry, cocoa taste. Has good acidity and a nice grip to the tongue. Pair well with grilled meats
Colin McKone rated this wine as
90/100 with the following review:
Dark ruby in colour with aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather, dark chocolate black paper and tobacco. It has flavours of black cherry, cassis chocolate and tobacco with some black pepper lingering on a medium finish. The alcohol, tannins and acidity are beautifully integrated. This is will pair nicely with strong or old cheeses as well as grilled red meats.

I poured myself a glass of the Rioja Luis Cañas then stepped away to answer a call. I came back to find my glass billowing with enticing aromas of ripe red fleshy fruit, sweet spices, mocha and vanilla. After my sip, I was sold! The palate guaranteed scrumptious notes of ripe cherry/berry, allspice, cocoa, vanilla, flavoured tobacco, and smoke. Enjoy this smooth, rich medium-bodied Rioja with char-grilled flank steak. Sylvain Segard reviewed this wine as follows:
Deep ruby red, nearly black. Intense aroma of blueberries and black olives with some old leather and herbal notes. Extra dry. Firm but not offensive tannins, which are well balanced with solid acidity. The blueberries taste extends into a long finish.
This wine should be enjoyed with food such grilled proteins or stews. It could benefit from a few more years of ageing. Score 90. (S.Segard, Reviewed jan. 15, 2017).

Dark ruby in the bowl, declared 14% ABV. Offering exceptional value, this Crianza 2014 vintage is a gem. Tart red berry, clove, black olive, cola notes and aged leather. Long finish with persistence of cola and leather. Pairs well with braised red meats, antipasti, aged cheeses. Tasted Jan 2017. Rated 90/100

A good example of a Tempranillo Crianza for tapas-style foods…
Presentation: Despite the relatively few words, the label comes off as busy, but the colours are appealing
Appearance: Medium ruby
Nose: A relatively light nose with leather, chocolate and dark fruit (dark cherries, blueberries), meat and black licorice
Taste: Dry, medium tannins, high acidity, medium bodied, with notes of sour cherries, blueberries, earth, blackcurrant leaf
Finish: short, fruity and earthy finish
Overall impression: An easy-to-drink, well balanced wine of fruit with earth. It would pair well with cured meats and old cheeses – think Spanish tapas…
Value: 3.5/5

Luis Canas Crianza Tempranillo 2014, Rioja D.O.C.A., Spain: Lovely mature aromas of tanned leather and cigar box on the nose of this exceptionally well-priced Crianza. This robust, supple Spanish red wine is a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Garnacha (aka Grenache) grapes. The wine was aged for 12 months in 60& French oak barrels and 40% American. Enjoy with a rack of lamb. Drink: 2014-2019. 336719 14% XD 750 mL $18.95 Score: 91/100. November 25, 2017 Best Value Red Wine. Best Beef Wine Full Review
