Tasted Aug 4, 2017. Colour medium ruby, good legs. Aromas and flavours of blackberry, cocoa, black pepper and roasted meat. Taste very dry, a bit disjointed, but still pleasing. Medium plus mouthfeel. Medium to long finish. I just drank this wine on its own and compared it to "Tremendo" same grape. The Tremendo was more to my liking.
But the Altos is very good for the price. I also like these wines because the alcohol being high does not show up hot on the taste.

rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Dark berries, violets, smoke and spice aromas. The flavours are similar as the nose with dry fruit and pepper on the finish. A dry red with good acidity and pleasing tannins. Over 85% of the vines planted in Jumilla are Monastrell given that the long hot summers in the region are perfect for this varietal. I paired this Monastrell with pasta with bolognese sauce and the result was delicious. A great value wine.

Violets and plum galore! Here we have an interesting single varietal red (Monastrell - mostly utilized as a blend in Rioja and Ribera del Duero in Spain) with lovely developed tannins. The palate is chewy but shows balanced sweet tannins. Dominant flavours include plum, licorice, black tea and spice. Enjoy with braised short ribs. Olivares Altos De La Hoya Monastrell 2014, Jumilla D.O., Spain: A tasty and full-bodied red wine with black and dark red fruit aromas and flavours. Monastrell is also known as Mataró or Mourvèdre in other regions, and usually creates rich wines of great depth and concentration. Try it tonight with pepperoni pizza. The vines for this full-bodied red wine are grown at a high altitude of 825 metres above sea level on ungrafted vines which imparts both intensity and balance.
