Absolutely delicious! Alluring black plum, blackcurrant, and spearmint aromas upfront with rich ripe black fruit, spice and mild minted chocolate flavours on the palate. It's silky smooth with balanced acidity and fine dusty tannins. No harsh green vegetal notes or pepper clove flavours to be found!

We have all been well-informed that Carmenere needs time develop phenolic fruit ripeness - i.e. ripeness of fruit flavours - because it is a grape varietal with the highest levels of pyrazine compounds (undesirable vegetal characteristics in wine). So, why does overly green peppery Carmeneres still find it's way around? And how does Vina San Pedro do it? Because they are smart and patient!

This elegant single vineyard Carmenere hails from the warm valley floors of the Central-South Maule Valley in Chile. The micro-climate is near perfect for Carmenere grapes incubate long enough and achieve phenolic ripeness. The Carmenere grapes are also the last to be harvested and vinified. Enjoy this rich full-bodied Chilean Carmenere with meat pies (Chilean Empanadas). Tasted June 2017 by @sommsosa | bespoketastings.ca
Jennifer Havers rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This 201 vintage experienced a spring frost, however, the second growth grapes resulted in lower yields and great concentration of flavours. The Maule Valley is nestled between mountain ranges, and experiences warmer growing conditions compared to other regions in the area. The resulting wine has a nice concentration of flavours, including ripe berry and red fruit combined with clove, white pepper and warm spice. Medium bodied, smooth tannins, and a medium+ finish. Enjoy this with roasted duck and mushrooms or other game meat.
Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Yum yum! The relatively closed nose belies the generous, fruity flavours: black currant/berry, leather, delicate spice and pepper. Rich and full-bodied with a sweet-ish finish. Delicious. Winemaker Matias Cruzat pairs this with empanadas. Sounds good to me!
Lynn van der Linde rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Carmenère grape needs a very warm region to see its potential, as it requires an extended ripening time to balance its naturally acidic characteristic. The 2014 vintage, while it experienced a slightly smaller grape production as a result of an early spring freeze, had an otherwise warm and lengthy ripening period.

Dark ruby in the glass, spicy aromas up front transform to a rich dark fruit berry flavor, with balanced acidity and tannin. This makes for a wonderful pairing with steak or barbecued fare. 91 pts.

Jane Staples rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Spring frost resulted in a small vintage for the 2014 Carmenere, but the with fewer grapes, more concentrated flavours made a great wine product. This full-bodied elegant wine has intense aromas of ripe red fruit, with exciting spice treatment, using paprika, white pepper and nutmeg. The flavourful palate is luscious with well-balanced structure, smooth tannins and great acidity. Excellent match for pheasant, partridge, grilled red meats, risotto and strong cheeses. A great wine for food!

Gwen Barton rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Wonderful Carmenere from the Maule Valley in Chili. Aromas of ripe, red fruit with oaky notes and mild herbaceous undertones. Med-full bodied with smooth tannins given its young age. Lovely savoury finish. Good structure and well balanced with nice acidity. Enjoy with mushroom risotto. Tasted June 2017.
Tania Thomas rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

The fruit for this 100% Carmenére comes from the vineyards located in the foothills of Andes in Chilean Maule Valley. Pronounced notes of paprika and white pepper. Great structure with tons of red cherries on the palate and plenty of weight. Superfine, smooth, velvety tannins with lingering finish. Easy drinking, food-friendly and approachable. A given as a pairing with roasted chicken, grilled meats and wild mushroom risotto. The winemaker shared his perfect pairing suggestion with us: Chilean empanada’s with meat and onion. Yummy!! Stephen Andrews reviewed this wine as follows:

Tasted this wine at wine club March 15th 2017. Ruby red and clear colour. Lots of aroma on the nose, Mello cherry, spicy cigar box. On the palate more of the same with dark plum, and raspberry jam, soft tannins. Medium finish. Very mouth watering. I liked this wine the best of the three Carmenere's that we tasted. Good value.

Natalie's Review

San Pedro 1865 Single Vineyard Carmenere 2014, Maule Valley, Chile: Wow, this single vineyard Carmenere rocks! Carmenere is arguably the flagship red wine of Chile. It has it all: concentrated, rich black fruit flavours and depth, yet it's supple and smooth with a long finish. Velvet on the palate, lingering in the mind. The wines from San Pedro's 1865 line come from its own vineyard planted with a specific variety. The Carmenere comes from the winery's property in the Maule Valley, with rolling hillside vineyards averaging 20 years of age and planted in alluvial soil with angular stones to control plant vigour. This robust red wine finishes with notes of cassis and dried tobacco. Great balance and depth. Try it with a rack of lamb tonight. Highly recommended.
