A pleasant bottle on Easter dinner with the immediate family and Tom.
Dinner of lamb, mushrooms, brocolli, potatoes, and salad. Rolls and cheese as well.
Everyone enjoyed the bottle.
Stephen Andrews reviewed this wine as follows:
I am drinking this wine on the recommendation of my physician. He is an accomplished wind drinker, therefore it must be a healthy wine(: A colour of cherry red. Opened for at least one and one half hours before consuming. The nose reminds me of blueberry pie and canned plums with a whiff of smoke. On the palate jammy and fruity, blueberry, plum, cherry and oak spice. The taste of cherry continued after the wine was swallowed.
The blend is 96% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot. Argentina Malbec in general '' fruit forward, plummy with a velvety texture'' I felt this wine was a lighter Malbec in structure, which I personally like in a wine.
I learned that Susanna Balbo is also the winemaker of the Criso series and also Benmarco. She also makes Nosotros Malbec a high end product for $100 Canadian, last time I looked. Limited availablity in Ontario.
I would conclude the Susana Balbo Signature is good value.
Luc Delorme rated this wine as
89/100 with the following review:
The deep purple typical of Malbec is fitting for this full-bodied, significantly tannic wine. Black currant and stewed plum on the nose remain on the palate, with some smoky flavours also coming through. With low acidity and minimal residual sugar, only the alcohol is left to balance the high tannic content. Full and drying in the mouth, the finish is shorter than expected.
Nice Argentinian Malbec at a good price. I'd let it age a few more years to let the tannins soften a bit.

Typical and expected was the first thought but the Balbo Signature malbec takes a detour into aromatics where pencil lead, graphite and savoury herbs really dominate. The fruit is as dark and rich as ever, like so many sistren but those umami aromas really take the cake (away). Nice change of pace. Drink 2016-2020. Tasted October 2016.
