I had the privilege of tasting this wine at the Don Maximiano Estate in Chile’s Aconcagua Valley with one if their top wine makers Wladimir Medel Pino on January 12, 2016.
This 2013 blend is sourced from the prestigious Max vineyards surrounding the estate is comprised of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carmenere and 5% Petit Verdot.
The alluvial soil found in the vineyard lends to the wines finesse and elegance. The growing season was described as perfect with cool temperatures in spring and fall, which allowed the grapes to hang for 15 days longer than average prior to harvest, thus contributing to more concentrated fruit.
The aromas brought forth in this exquisite wine consist of damson plum, fresh, dark fruit, baking spice, dried rosemary, black pepper with notes of dark chocolate and leather. Silky tannins, full bodied yet elegant, this magnificent wine has age potential of 7+ years.

Don Maximiano Errázuriz founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870 and he was the first to plant French grape varieties in the Aconcagua Valley, Chile.
His initiative and creativity were handed down to future generations and, in just over a century, his descendants consolidated the winery and positioned their wines among the world’s most noteworthy.
Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano’s descendant, Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to lead this exceptional estate. An industrial engineer by profession, he joined the administration of Viña Errázuriz after graduating from University. He learned viticulture and winemaking from his father and later studied in Bordeaux.
Celebrating their 145th anniversary this year (2015), the future is looking bright for Errazuriz, even Mr. Robert Parker agrees: “In my opinion, what this estate will produce in the next twenty years will completely surpass the previous twenty years.” Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
The legendary Don Maximiano is a blend of red varietals that gets adjusted every year to create what Mr. Chadwick describes as a master piece. The 2013 is comprised of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Malbec, 6% Carménère and 5% Petit Verdot.
In the glass, it is a very intense and bright dark ruby red with thick inky legs on the inside of the glass.
The nose is intense with aromas of crushed red berries, toast & vanilla, cacao, violets, sun-ripe juicy green bell peppers, and a hint of dried mint.
The palate is silky, complex and bold. Dry, smoky and spicy with red cherry compote and earthy notes. Juicy acidity, velvety tannins followed by a lusciously persistent finish.
This wine embodies the “wow” factor… Seriously.
