The Grinder Pinotage 2013 from South Africa, Western Cape, is super intense with lovely espresso, mocha, vanilla, and dark berry notes. Repeat on the palate. Big flavour, great structure. This is an intense wine that commands big flavoured dishes. Complex burgers, ground coffee rubbed tenderloin, beet salad with goat cheese and fresh ground pepper would all be fantastic with this wine. Coffee-styled Pinotage are very popular in South Africa and can be attributed to the incredibly heavy toasted oak barrels that play the largest role in contributing those coffee and mocha aromas and flavours. Since this style hit the market roughly 15 years ago it has attracted a loyal following around the world. Tasted May 2015. 89-90 points. Great value! Now a Vintages Essential product. The 2013 vintage of The Grinder is made of South Africa's signature Pinotage grape varietal. This wine is 14.0% ABV, ruby red. Showing upfront aromatics of mocha coffee and vanilla bean, dark chocolate, this wine is medium bodied, with well integrated medium tannins and red fruit. Pair with BBQ grilled red meats, bitter dark chocolate based unsweetened desserts or a vegan roasted beet and root vegetable stew.

Aromas are predominantly of coffee and earth with a hint of mocha and tart cherry. Nice medium body, earthy and coffee flavours are balanced with a nice smooth cherry palate. Just a hint of pepper as well. Great to have with something on the BBQ, or just enjoy on its own. Great price point.

A unique, dry, full-bodied wine yet not heavy. You can definitely pick up the coffee notes on the nose. Like many wines understanding the region offers much to the experience. This is a classic Pinotage from South Africa with strong coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, hickory and smokey aromas and flavours. I enjoyed it with sharp cheddar cheese but it would pair well with BBQ ribs or perhaps mole.
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as
88/100 with the following review:
As a Pinotage, this is a little more black cherry and mocha than espresso, and it has a nice inky minerality and toasted oak character to the aroma as well. A well balanced cherry flavour with a bit tartness, but still round enough to be a nice sipping wine.
Tom Vigeant reviewed this wine as follows:
Red berries, moka, vanilla and a somewhat earthy aromas and flavours. Acidity point a little bit high. Medium body and tannins. Dry.

Sweet mocha notes with blackberry and cherry fruits, makes me feel like eating a coffee crisp bar! Cherry, blackberry, and carob on the palate. I would have this as an after dinner treat paired with some strong cheese or tiramisu.

The Grinder Pinotage 2013, Swartland W.O., South Africa: Love that coffee, espresso, mocha nose! You'll never forget it, or confuse it with anything. This full-bodied, delicious red wine is made from South Africa's signature (and quite distinctive) Pinotage grape, a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir. This wine is dry, but it finishes with delicious flavours of dark chocolate. Pair it with grilled meats, especially chary pork chops. Yum! Drink: 2014-2017. 572107 14% XD 750 mL $14.95 Score: 89/100.
