From the Veneto wine region, Storia Antica 2018 is a great value Ripasso Valpolicella Superiore from the Veneto wine region. Full-bodied and lushly layered with rich dark fruit, savoury, dark, smoky and toasty on the palate from oak ageing. Well-structured and balanced with supple tannins, this is a comfort wine and a perfect pairing to slow-braised beef ribs. "Storia antica" translates to "ancient history."

Valpolicella Ripasso food pairings: grilled steaks, slow-cooked beef, osso Bucco.

Reviews and Ratings

Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Ripasso are one of my favourite Italian wines. It's that wine in between Valpolicella and Amarone. Made from the same grapes but with a different process. (Second fermentation with the Amarone must added to a Valpolicella wine).

The Storia Antica is found frequently in Vintages in the LCBO. I highly recommend next time you see some that you pick up a few bottles!

Intense aromas of ripe black cherry, chocolate and plum. Smooth tannins on the palate with juicy red fruit, some sour cherry and a touch of spice. Long fruit finish.

One of my favourite dishes is to make a mushroom risotto, take some Ripasso and boil it down to thicken and drizzle over the risotto - along with a glass of the wine of course! Tasted June 2021
