So elegant, august, complex and balanced. If I had zillions, I'd drink this wine daily. I’ve long been a fan of this aristocratic red wine from Napa. This wine comes off as beautifully polished, structured and elegant, and is a blend of 17% Cabernet Sauvignon; 7% Cabernet Franc. Aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, fig, smoke and leather, it’s a classic. Decant 1-2 hours. Pair with hanger steak.

Merlot food pairings: rack of BBQ ribs, veal Porterhouse, grilled lamb, beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

An tremendous vintage for Merlot - week after week of consistent daytime heat and cool evenings. The 2014 Shafer Merlot is one of Napa Valleys's top red wines. John Shafer and his family founded the Shafer vineyards in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley in 1979. The 2014 Merlot included Malbec (14%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (8%), adding complexity and depth. The bouquet is beautiful with elegant, lingering scents of cherry, strawberry, plum, mocha, and floral. The palate is divine with rich, intertwined layers and flavors of plum, dark cherry, spice and tobacco. Drink now or cellar 5-7 years. Tasted November 2017.
California Shafer (2014) is a beautifully built full-bodied Merlot from the Napa Valley wine region. On the palate, this mostly Merlot wine is dark raspberry, dried fruit, leather and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc play supporting roles in this elegant, well-structured red. Decant two hours prior to serving or hold for five years. - Community Wine Reviews
