A juicy, plush, berry-rich Californian Zinfandel with purple plums on the finish. The winery is named for the Old World navigational instrument that used the sun, stars and horizon to chart a course on open water. The vines are planted in the arid, rocky soils of Monterey County, just north of Paso Robles. The chalky soils yield intense berry flavours. Pair with barbecued meats.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This Zinfandel, sourced from the Central Coast comes from a solid vintage and packs tremendous body. 14.8% alcohol and brimming with flavours to sink your teeth into. This wine is ultraripe. Interestingly, Zinfandel ripens unevenly in its vine cluster. Because the berries ripen at different rates in the bunch, many producers wait until every berry is ripe which also means some are overripe. It gives an interesting array of overripe resinous fruit and youthful vivacity.
This wine is glass-coating garnet with a purple rim.
It oozes red licorice, cherry, bramble, prune, and cassis. Plently of spicey pepper, coffee, and milk chocolate.
There are plenty of Zins to chose from, in the California section in liquor stores. This one provides a good array of spice and fruit. It's a decent value and represents how Zin should be.
Pair it with portobello burgers or tourtiere.
90 Editors' Choice WINE ENTHUSIAST
"This wine from San Ardo Ranch in the San Lucas appellation wins against Zins twice the price. Black cherry and blackberry aromas meet with sensuous lilacs and wet asphalt on the nose. The palate's cherry juice front quickly turns to tobacco, dried blueberry and a tarry, dried-berry finish." MATT KETTMANN, Dec 31, 2015
