Natalie's Score: 91/100

A full-bodied and muscular Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet red wine blend from the Tuscany wine region. Wine grapes are vinified and aged separately in small French and American oak casks for up to one year prior to blending and bottling. Silky with structured tannins, look for concentrated black cherry, plum, savoury herb, a flinty, spicy flavours finishing vibrant and supple on the palate.

Food pairings: pork tenderloin, grilled chicken, autumn hodge-podge.

Reviews and Ratings

Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

A blend of 37% Sangiovese, 32% Merlot, and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon from Ruffino's Poggio Casciano Estate, near the renowned Tuscan city of Florence. 2017 Modus shows juicy layers of dark fruits, plum, blackcurrant, mocha, sweet spices, cigar box, and leather. Inky with fine tannins, this bold and balanced Tuscan wine is ideally suited for enjoying now and over the next decade with braised dishes like rich Osso Buco or marinated and grilled hanger steak with bagna cauda pan sauce (the Northern Italian sauce of anchovies and garlic melted into butter and olive oil). A value-priced Super Tuscan I recommend buying by the case and enjoying 2020-2030. Tasted August 2020. 92 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Rachelle O'Connor rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

A Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. An elegant nose of plump cherries, stewed blackberry, mint sprigs and mouthwatering dark chocolate. Magical flavors and layers of dark berry fruit, oak, sweet pipe tobacco, cocoa and vanilla. This wine is full bodied with chewy, young tannins and loads of aging potential. Drink now or enjoy ten years from now.
Christian Marcoux rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Good classic Italian wine, the 2017 Modus from Ruffino located in Tuscany, Italy offers delicious aromas of red currant, roasted tomato, potpourri, clay pot, cured meat, mocha and cinnamon. Blended from 37% Sangiovese, 32% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon this Super Tuscany show chewy tannin, full body and supple acidity. The finish is dried and well structured, giving the wine plenty of food pairing possibility or to drink on its own. Palate: tarte cherry, tarte strawberry, black pepper, leather, campfire, cinnamon and sandalwood. Enjoy!
Jennifer Havers - WSET Level 3 rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Aromas of dried and ripe cherry, plum, and blackberry, with warm, spicy notes and a hint of leather. Full bodied, with some grippy tannins, medium acidity, ripe and dried fruit notes and some herbaceous notes on the palate, and a medium-long finish. Enjoy with charcuterie.
Ruffino Modus 2017 is a robust red wine blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot grapes sourced from the Tuscany wine region. The wine undergoes a malolactic fermentation and a post-fermentative maceration on the skins for 2 weeks to add richness and depth. Love the layers of ripe black cherry, herbs, dried tobacco leaf, spice and vanilla flavours lush and full finishing smoky. Pair with grilled meats. - Community Wine Reviews
