Terrific finesse and elegance on this special bottle of Mondavi Maestro, celebrating the winery's 50th anniversary (it was found in 1966 but the release of this 2013 vintage is in 2016). Aromas of dark fruit and smoke. An extra long finish. Pair with good memories.

Reviews and Ratings

David Skinner rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby and a light pink rim. Black cherry, dark plums with vanilla and spice float gracefully from the glass. Full bodied and well balanced with chewy tannins and plenty of dark fruit flavours and spice. A lengthy finish that keeps giving.

Fantastic wine and begs some aggression with the food. Try this with venison terrine and cherry compote.
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

Sometimes when doing wine reviews I feel like a teacher marking papers! This wine gets an A++ A beautiful layered red with aromas of smoke, leather, cooked dark red fruits. The tannins are still quite tight so a few more years in the cellar are definitely in order. A long tannic finish with plenty of fruit. I would pair this with a medium-rare steak with a slice of blue cheese. Or, just the blue cheese by the fireplace! Tasted November 27, 2016.
Cherie Cole rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

As part of Mondavi's 50th anniversary, this wine is worthy of a celebration. Deep ruby with layers of sensual aromas consisting of dried, dark fruit, plum, dark chocolate, vanilla and a hint of dried mint. Velvety tannins, with flavours of dried fruit, baking spice and a long, dark-chocolate finish. Tasted November 27, 2016.
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 94/100 with the following review:

To celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their estate winery, Robert Mondavi has released a special blend they refer to as Maestro. If you can manage to get your hands on some (it is sold out online already!) get one and save it. It's a bordelais blend built around mostly Merlot, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.
Medium ruby, with a lot of pink and purple to the rim.
The aromas have a lovely chocolate and graham cracker quality. As it opens up, there is a lot of lavender, cherry, and black forest cake.
The palate doesn't disappoint. Chocolate, raspberry and cherry, smoke, vanilla (75% French oak for 21 months), clove, nutmeg, and a subtle uptick in tannic firmness towards the finish.
2013 was a really nice vontage for California and this wine, sourced throughout Napa, is both an unexpected inversion of Mondavi's predilection with Cabernet Sauvignon and undeniably delicious. It is very plush and may not cellar as long as similarly tiered Cabs from them, but should provide plenty of enjoyment for the next 3-7 years.
Pair this with sliders or flank steak.
For Mondavi, it is a bargain. Here's to antoher fifty years!
Bill Wright Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Pallete follows nose of ripe red rasberrry and cherry. Full bodied and smooth. Long finish of tart fruit and subtle wood. This is just asking for a pepper steak,
Matt Steeves - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Robert Mondavi's 50th anniversary wine, named Maestro, showcases the incredible quality and complexity that this iconic Napa winery continues to achieve. Deep ruby red the nose shows concentrated dark berries, fig, black currants, and sweet baking spices. The palate offers layers and layers of dried dark fruits, figs, stewed fruit, and spice. A rich and delicious red that would be wonderful as a gift to any wine lover. Enjoy with braised beef dishes, charcoal grilled beef tenderloin, or fireside with good company. Drink 2016-2026. Tasted November 2016. 93+ points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
Douglas McMillan rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Wow. The aromas are incredible; stewed black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, India ink, and dried herbs. The taste is just as amazing, with great acidity, deep fruit flavours mirroring the aromas, and round, grippy tannins.
Gwen Barton rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Happy Anniversary Mondavi! Beautiful. LE d of Bordeaux wines. Lovely aromas of cigar, dark cherry and plums. Wonderful tastes of sweet spice, dark chocolate and jammy fruits. Soft, smooth tannins... loved it! I enjoyed sipping this on its own.
Donna Hargrove rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

The ruby red has an interesting blend of chocolate and cherry flavours on the tongue. With layers of fruit, spice and chocolate this would be an excellent wine to sip on its own or pair with braised beef or ribs. Robert Mondavi does not disappoint.
Mary Anne van Gaal rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Mondavi is marking their 50th anniversary in fine style with this special blend. The beautiful ruby colour foreshadows a nose of ripe cherry and pepper. Flavours of dark fruit, chocolate and smoke linger along with the tannins. This would pair nicely with beef or ostrich Wellington.
Terry Jeans - Certified S rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

This is an amazingly complex nose that you can sniff and get notes of something different every time. It has spice, dark chocolate, ripe red fruits, cigar box with a full-body and round acidity. The tannins are high and with the great structure, it could last decades and only get better. Highly recommended!
Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Wow! This wine is showing fresh figs, dates, red field berry, blackberry, medium plus tannins, graphite minerality, dark chocolate. Well-balanced, integrating tannins and fruit, complexity. Long finish with persistence of dark chocolate, dried fig. This 2013 vintage is drinking well now, with potential for aging into 2023. Tasted Nov 2016 - @jonsteeves rated 93/100 - bespoketastings.ca
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This is the wine Mondavi crafted to commemorate their 50th anniversary and to that I say, job well done! The Maestro is a Meritage (blend of the heritage of the prestigious Bordeaux red grape varietals). Aromas are clean with moderate notes of black berry fruit, violets, licorice, and dark chocolate. Flavours are well-rounded and every-so-changing in the glass. Black berry fruit and sweet baking spices are the most pronounced notes but minute after minute you find a complex discovery of berry, sweet spice, leather, licorice, mocha, and minty notes. Enjoy this smooth, well-balance, full-bodied Napa Valley red with prime rib roast. Tasted Dec 2016 - @sommsosa / bespoketastings.ca
Nick Onischuk - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

The Robert Mondavi Maestro 2013 is a special wine and must try if you get the opportunity! Absolutely stunning nose when you first dive in - dark berry fruit, raspberry, spice. Full bodied wine that has a long finish of dark berry fruit and oak. Tasted November 2016 (91/100)
Melanie Aubert rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Yum! Mondavi rarely disappoints. So much going on here: plum, dark fruit, tobacco, chocolate, and cedar. Wow. Buy this for a special occasion and drink the whole bottle with that special someone.
