You can smell the high alcohol on the nose though on the palate it's not evident given the weight and aromatic intensity of this wine. Black cherry liqueur and kirsch with smoke. This is a full-on blockbuster. Pair with brontosaurus burgers and pterodactyl wings.

Food pairings: game, roast leg of lamb, rich meat lasagne.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

Quintarelli is legendary for their quality handling of Valpolicella style (using Corvina. Rondinella, Molinara. They also dabble in the IGT category, producing international varoetals with the old-school flare and aromatics this house is known for. Often, they focus on mostly Cabernet Franc (which makes me very happy), but also Merlot.
Merlot is versatile and moldable. In this case, they essentially repassed it (ripasso) onto Amarone lees. This restars fermentation tp make a big, chunky, bold wine with tons of aromatic character. After that, it is put into large Slavonian oak barrels for seven years!
Glass coating and inky garnet.
You get whiffs of alcoholic kirsch, blueberry amd blackberry preserve, chestnut, and damson.
Flavourful, indeed! Rich and velvety. Lots more cherry and chocolate. There is some acidity. Very soft. Plum and licorice on the finish.
This is one wine that has to be practically consumed with a fork and knife. Put itnwoth coffee rubbed t-bones or age it for another five years.
The legendary Mr. Quintarelli passed away in 2012. Sadly, many of us will never get to meet him, but you can still drink his magic for a few years more.
Quintarelli Rosso Ca' Del Merlo 2009 is a robust, blockbuster red with intense black cherry liqueur on the nose. The wine blend is Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Nebbiolo, Croatina and Sangiovese wine grapes. This wine is named in honour of former winemaker Giuseppe Quintarelli. - Community Wine Reviews
