A serious, deep, rich Merlot with seemingly endless layers of plush black plums and berries. Fine tannins give a superbly smooth mouth-feel. More than 90% of the grapes come from Quails' Gate Boucherie Mountain vineyards.

Merlot food pairings: Angus beef strip loin steak served with red skin potato and mushroom sauté and green peppercorn butter.

Reviews and Ratings

Monique rated this wine as 92/100
Tom Vigeant reviewed this wine as follows:

Cherry red with some garnet hues sneaking in (tasted in April 2013). Enticing raspberry jam and oak on the nose. Four and half years into its life and tannins are still nice and firm. Full-bodied with generous alcohol and rich, fleshy fruit (again, the jam), well integrated oak. Nice long finish. World class. Beautiful now but you could still forget it in your cellar for 3-4 years. Drink with game, lamb, slow cooked red meats (follow me at sommeliertom.com).
The 2008 Merlot grapes were handpicked in October from Quails’ Gate vineyards. The 2008 season provided ideal growing conditions and the cool October nights helped to preserve the fruits flavor and acidity. Pre fermentation, cold soaking and extended post ferment maceration are techniques used to bring out the best of this magnificent vineyard site. Our Merlot is aged for 18 months in new and 1 year old French oak barrels and will reward careful cellaring of up to 7 years.
Ripe plum fruits mingle with layers of sweet, smoky, toasty oak. The fine ripe tannins bring a velvety quality to this beautifully integrated palate. The wine is complex and supple and robust enough to see you through a cold winter.
