A remarkably fragrant Cabernet with vibrant colour and a mind-blowing velvet texture on the palate. There is also small amounts of Merlot, Shiraz and Malbec grapes in the blend. Rich, supple and full-bodied with aromas of dark fruit and smoke. Pair with duck or game meats.

Cabernet Sauvignon food pairings: roast beef, rare steak, grilled meats, game.

Reviews and Ratings

Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Deeply concentrated dark ruby red and 14.8% ABV. This wine shows minerality, dark plum, eucalyptus and a hint of mint leaf. Great structure and complexity, chewy, savoury, well-balanced with great fruit, high acidity and bold tannins. Showing well when tasted and cellaring potential to 2030. Fruit was sourced from diversified Barossa sub appellations of Rosedale, Light Pass, Stockwell, Tanunda and Vine Vale. Pairs well with braised or BBQ red meats, game, or hot Italian sausage ragout. @jonsteeves rated 92/100 - tasted May 2016
Tania Thomas - CSW, WSET ADV rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Crafted in Peter’s honor, this is a fantastic Barossa Cab. Big and bold, brimming with aromas and flavours of dark cherries, cassis and dark mint chocolate. Great structure and refinement with impressive fruit density due to partial barrel fermentation followed by 15 months maturation in French oak. Solid backbone of firm tannins just starting to soften. Closes in a long, lingering smoke–tinged finish. A given as a pairing with grilled meats, slow roasts and charcuterie. Tasted May 2016/92 points. Tania Thomas – www.runawaygrape.com
David Skinner rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby and a purple rim. Classic cassis fragrance accompanied by violets and some dark chocolate. Full bodied and smooth tannins on top of delicious black fruits and chocolate. Great acidity and a persistent finish with plenty of fruit. Named in honour of the founder himself, Peter Lehmann, and is a fitting tribute.

I’d try this with a beef short rib ragout served with pappardelle or just a nice medium rare rib-eye.
Craig Kuziemsky rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This wine is named in honor of Peter Lehmann for all the numerous people he has mentored in his life. The nose offers black fruit and mocha. The palate is a wonderful array of cassis, blackberry, and mocha. The finish is long with slightly gripping tannins.
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Absolutely yummy! This wine is fittingly named in honour of Peter Lehmann and his legacy as a mentor to many folks he encountered through his 50 year career in wine. Pouring with an inky ruby red appearance, this wine shows clean pronounced aromas of stewed berries, baking spice, cocoa, licorice, cedar and tobacco leaf. The palate recalls nose with high notes of spice and stewed fruit. This wine is dry with smooth tannins and a high balanced acidity. Enjoy this robust Cab Sauv with rib eye, rack of lamb or a beef tenderloin roast. Tasted May 2016.
Pamela Chiles rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Big and chewy, lots of that black fruit, you know, a bit of cocoa, tobacco, spice all wound up with chalky dry tannins (you can almost see/smell them coming at you from the glass!) and all very likeable. Put a couple away for a rainy day.
Meg Charette - WSET ADV rated this wine as 88/100 with the following review:

“Barossa Valley is a wine makers paradise” a saying by Peter Lehmann that his wine makers remember him for and honour. It was kept in mind in the making of The Mentor, named to honour the beloved visionary himself, Peter Lehmann. In representation of Peter Lehmann, the Mentor displays a great amount of power, boldness and quality. In the glass it is a dense, deep ruby purple with moderately thick, slow falling legs. On the nose and palate it displays a beautiful intensity of plum skins, blackberry, liquorice, peppermint, baking spices and cedar. Mouth feel is full bodied, high acidity, with very distinct velvety tannins that weigh predominantly on the tongue and last through the long tannic plum finish.
Can be enjoyed while being paired with a juicy rare filet mignon to compliment the tannins and body of the wine.
Emilie Ryan rated this wine as 85/100 with the following review:

Keep this one for a while longer before drinking…
Presentation: Nice, classic, distinctive label
Appearance: Dark ruby
Nose: Violet/floral, cassis and other dark fruits, eucalyptus
Taste: Lots of tannins! Spicy, violets, leather, charcoal, chewy
Finish: Tannins. Spicy, charcoal and long.
Overall impression: This wine holds up to spicy food, but I would keep it a while longer before drinking, so the tannins soften.
Value: 2.5/5
