Full-bodied and relatively smooth with charred black fruit and toasty oak and smoke. Perfect for barbecued meats. Mater is made from the Primitivo grape (aka Zinfandel) -- hand-picked grapes when they begin to overripen. It's aged for 24 months in Slovenian oak barrels, and another 12 months in bottle.

Primitivo food pairings: roast leg of venison with sautéed mushrooms and sweet onions, roast pheasant, fried wild rabbit on toast, hard cheeses.

Reviews and Ratings

Wineboy rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Although not classic it did a nice dance for me. A touch of alcohol on the nose with classic ripe fruit and spice. This replayed with a touch of dryness not seen in American Zinfandels. Uncharacteristic cooked meat flavours late - which added to my pleasure.
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Prominent minty eucalyptus and berry notes with an out-of-place rubbery earthy finish.
A medium+ bodied Italian Primitivo (aka Zinfandel) with a juicy mouthfeel and mild tannins. Tasted May 2017 by @sommsosa | bespoketastings.ca
From Salento, Puglia, Miali Mater (2012) is a hearty Primitivo with meat, leather, dried cranberry and red berries on the nose and palate. Great value for under $20 and great with grilled ribs or gourmet burgers. - Community Wine Reviews
