Natalie's Score: 94/100

This is a more complex and richly woven Sauvignon Blanc than the winery's entry-level version. There's a longer pungency and persistence of flavours. Very mouth-filling and luscious with surprising lift and vibrancy. Winemaker Anthony is after more ripe tropical fruit in this expression, such as passion fruit, melon, and guava. So vibrant and expressive with clean slate and white citrus on the finish. Pair with mussels, oysters and scallops.

Sauvignon Blanc food pairings: Margherita pizza, salad, pork, strong cheese.

Reviews and Ratings

Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

This wine wins points for typicity in my humble opinion. Gooseberry, grass, citrus, honeydew melon, guava, and some minerality. Refreshing acidity opens the palate and preps it for food. The length is long on a succulent citrus finish. Each vintage, Kim Crawford winemakers select small batches of phenomenal grapes and craft the Small Parcels wines. Always consistent and delicious. Enjoy this on it's own or a great salad wine.

Cherie Cole rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Everything you’d wish for in a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc can be found in this wine. Brimming with tropical fruit notes, fresh green bean and pink grapefruit. Lively acidity, great complexity and a long, delicious tropical fruit finish. Tasted July 24, 2016.
Mymi Thesingingsommelier - Sommelier, FWS rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

In 1996, Kim Crawford and his wife Erica fell in love with the idea of starting a winery. In the beginning, they ran the company from a spare room of their home in Central Auckland, New Zealand and without owning grapevines or tanks, Kim and Erica produced their first 4,000 cases, thereby established Kim Crawford Wines. Only two years after launch, Kim Crawford Wines began exporting to the United States. Within four years, the company moved into a state-of-the-art winery in Marlborough and began looking at vineyards to purchase and cultivate. Just six years after these humble beginnings, Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc made the 2003 Wine Spectator's Top 100 List to roaring acclaim!
One of the first wineries in New Zealand to utilize the screw cap and producing fruit-driven Chardonnays at the time of the oaky Chardonnay craze, it is safe to say that Kim Crawford is a pioneer who isn’t afraid to go against the grain… And thank goodness he did!
This 2014 Small Parcels Spitfire Sauvignon Blanc takes its name from a famous site in Marlborough that was once used as an air force base during WWII.
It is a brilliant light straw colour.
On the nose, it exudes citrusy, grassy and tropical fruit aromas!
On the palate, it has serious personality! Big, bold with lots of papaya and pink grapefruit flavours. Medium acidity and a lingering zesty finish that begs for another sip!
Would be charming with oysters, if you like them! I would simply enjoy it on its own… In good company!
Alex & Priya - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Priya: Guava and citrus on nose, slight saltiness, very dry, citrus notes on finish. Too austere for me, tastes like wet stone after the rain. It's intense! 86 pts

Alex: You betcha my lady! Lower yields are apparent here, and the concentration of the Blind River sub-region (which is the dominant grape source here). Lots of tropical notes, papaya and ripe peach, kumquat, white pepper and a herbal dash of green bean. Full, concentrated palate, yes it's quite austere and really intense, a marvel of the style that perhaps isn't for everybody. I enjoyed it, and $25 is a fair price. 86 pts
Paula Bernardino rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

I had the chance to attend an educational seminar on blending Kim Crawford’s Sauvignon Blancs in Montreal where the special guest was Kim Crawford’s senior winemaker Anthony Walkenhorst. The 2014 Kim Crawford Small Parcels Spitfire Sauvignon Blanc was paired with seared scallop chowder. This pairing worked well because of the creamy chowder texture and the corn in it with the flavours of melon and citrus found in this Sauvignon Blanc. It is available at the SAQ and at the LCBO.

The grapes for this zesty white are grown in the Growing Horizon Vineyard in central Wairau zone of Marlborough. - Community Wine Reviews
