Natalie's Score: 90/100

A robust, smooth New Zealand red wine, with fleshy black plums and some dark spice on the finish. Kim Crawford has that rare combination of being both popular with a wide swath of wine drinkers, and respected by even the pickiest connoisseurs. Finishes with black plum and a lick of spiced oak. Wonderful! Try it with grilled lamb or pork chops.

Merlot food pairings: grilled pork chops, hamburger, turkey, grilled seafood, beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Dianne Fisher - Sommelier, ISG rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Youthful colour in the glass with a purple hue. Fruit tones of brambleberry and plums are in the background with smoke and vanilla bean notes in the front. Cellar for a year to allow these flavours to integrate, or even longer due to its well structure acidity.
Sylvain Segard rated this wine as 86/100 with the following review:

Bright ruby red with purple hue. Fragrant blackberries and fresh plums nose. Full bodied with generous tannins. Smoke, vanilla and chocolate flavours dominate over the fresh fruit in the mouth.

Allow to breathe a good 30 minutes before serving. Will benefit from cellaring a couple of years to round out the tannins.
The Merlot grapes for this fine New Zealand red wine come from the sunny Hawke's Bay, which produces ripe, flavourful fruit (and wine). Merlot is traditionally a red wine grape in Bordeaux that's usually blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. - Community Wine Reviews
