Reviews and Ratings

Simon Chen rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

upon opening, the nose is muted with a hint of fresh red berries. On the palate, good fruits, medium tannin, and lingering soft tannin. Very approachable already, thanks for the warm vintage of 2016 in northern Rhone.
Andrew Bernardo rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

This has a deeply mineral core, with black plum, cassis, white pepper, hung meat and dried herbs. There is iron, 99% dark chocolate and Kenya AA coffee on the finish. Superb. 91 Points.
Lynn van der Linde - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Heady aromas of black fruit, dried herbs, and leather transform on the palate to a persistent peppery black cherry finish.
Lovely with red meat or hearty pasta dishes.
Tasted Sept 2018.
Lori Kilmartin WSET3 - WSET3 Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Gorgeous aromas wafting from the glass! Blackberry, plum, black pepper and spices. Medium body with soft tannins. Lots of fruit; juicy blackberry and blueberry and a with a long fruit finish. Tasted September 16, 2018.
Andrea Shapiro rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Light and juicy with red plum, roasted red pepper, paprika and nuances of red peppercorns. Flavours show red cherries, dates, and hints of earthy coca beans. Medium bodied, with lingering silky tannins and a lengthly finish. Try with soft creamy blue cheeses like St. Agur and cambazola or pepper filet mignon. 91 points - tasted September 2018
Colin McKone - Sommelier rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Dark ruby in colour with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, spice and black cherry. It is medium bodied with well integrated tannins, acidity and alcohol. On the plate there are flavours of ripe red berries, black pepper and baking spices. This will pair well with grilled red meats. Tasted on September 16, 2018.
Greg Hughes rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Delightful and suprisingly gentle on the tannins. This northern Rhone from J.L. Chave is a deep, hedonistic Syrah, with loads of concentration and depth.
Deep and concentrated ruby-purple. Plum, cassis jam and pepper. Some smoked meat emerges and gives it a wild edge.
Flavours of sanguinary iron, plum, red and black pepper, black cherry, and berries.
Pair with a wide array of cheese and cured meats.
Pam Hatton rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

Berry sweet nose with some spice. Juicy red fruit on the palate. Soft round tannins with balanced acidity. Long finish.
Melanie Lloyd - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

Aromas of blueberry, raspberry, and earthy beets with cocoa, hints of menthol, and subtle animal notes. On the palate, it is full bodied, with blueberry and cocoa flavours, and tannins that are present without being too grippy. More of a food-friendly wine.

Wine-Food Pairing: Barbecued steak.

Tasted September 2018
