Classic Aussie shiraz with black, almost toasted plums, generous oak and full-bodied heft. Some mint. Tasty! The Down-Underdog is the second-label Shiraz from Hugh Hamilton winery, and among a pack of playful per names such as “The Villain,” “The Scoundrel,” and “Jekyll & Hyde.” This robust red wine is named in honour of the winery’s faithful dog, Jimmy.

Shiraz food pairings: lamb cutlets with pepperade and goat cheese, hamburgers, pizza, black bean soup, beef.

Reviews and Ratings

Heather Wall - CS; WSET Advanced rated this wine as 90/100 with the following review:

This Shiraz ticks all the boxes. Deep ruby colour. Thick legs showing extraction. Stewed red and black fruit. Black pepper. Baking spices. Full-bodied. Medium+ acidity. Long length. Youthful tannins. Potential to age. Great price. Shiraz lovers dream. BBQ wine.
Tasted: January 2015
Jim Jim, the dog featured on the front label of this wine, is half Labrador and half Kelpie, the highly intelligent Australian sheep herding dog. Many indigenous place names in Australia are two words repeated such as Wagga Wagga and Never Never. - Community Wine Reviews
