Savoury and smoky with enticing mocha notes from oak aging on the nose of this full-bodied and layered Niagara Merlot. This wine is available directly from the winery. Pair with grilled pork chops.

Reviews and Ratings

Greg Hughes rated this wine as 89/100 with the following review:

This Merlot comes from a the famed Montague Estate of Inniskillin, in Niagara. This patch of land, in the Four Mile Creek appellation, was purchased early in Inniskillin's history (1982). It's planted to a lot of Burgundian varietals, but also Merlot. This example comes from a good year and the site is particularly sunny and exposed, so it generally has lots of ripeness.
A moderately dark hued Merlot. Deep violet colour.
It was aged in French and American Oak. Look for a balance of the suppleness of American (lighter chocolate and cocoanut) and the brooding vanilla of French. There are some blackberry and cherry notes. Rather smokey and savoury at this point.
The flavours are fresh. The acidity is good. Plum, blackberry, and blieberry. It does a bit better after being open to breathe a bit more.
This wine is rather young and it needs time to emerge into what it properly represents. At this stage (June 2017), it's a bit closed off and needs patience. This would be a good cellar choice for an Ontarian wine.
Inniskillin's Montagues can be seriously impressive with some age on them (especially Chardonnay). I would like to see this wine in five years.
If you must have it soon, put it with pizza with mushrooms, cured meat, and asparagus.
