Reviews and Ratings

Mymi Thesingingsommelier - Sommelier, FWS rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Johan Christian Henschke planted his first vineyard in the Eden Valley in the early 1860’s and his family has been making wine ever since!
Johan was one of many Silesians who had fled their homeland in search of religious freedom, and he arrived from Kutschlau in 1841. The wines he crafted were initially intended for consumption by family and friends, but with the first commercial release in 1868, believed to be principally riesling and shiraz, the wheels were set in motion for greater things to come.
Moving forward, fourth-generation Cyril Henschke pioneered varietal and single-vineyard wines at a time when blended wines and fortifieds were in vogue. His greatest legacy was the creation of Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone in the 1950s.
Today, fifth generation winemaker Stephen and his viticulturist wife Prue are recognised worldwide for their exceptional wines, innovation, sustainability in the vineyard and as custodians of the land.
The family has even created a nursery program to protect their vineyards and continue to lead the way environmentally to enrich their land as a legacy for their children, the sixth generation.
The fruit for this 2012 Mount Edelstone 60th Anniversary Vintage is sourced from the oldest single vineyard (planted solely to Shiraz) in Australia with vines averaging around 100 years of age.
In the glass, it is a deeply concentrated crimson red with bluish hues and inky legs.
The nose is vibrant with aromas of cherry, blackberry, plum, red earth, fresh bouquet garni and cocoa powder.
On the palate, it is big, bold and muscular! Very complex and intense. Black pepper, little masala spice blend, plums, blackberry compote and very ripe cherries. Chewy, velvety tannins are balanced by a refreshing acidity and the finish is sumptuously long.
It is a spectacular Shiraz! Keep a few bottles in your cellar and enjoy over the next 20 years!
Would pair beautifully with peppercorn crusted roast veal loin and a balsamic reduction or the darkest, highest cacao content chocolate you can find!
Brent Gushowaty rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Eye:
Pale with purple rim.

Nose:
Light bouquet with some cherry, plum and earth.

Palate:
Lighter bodied but with plenty of flavour, supple, remarkably fine and refined texture. A very graceful wine with some white pepper, plums, earthiness and cherry notes. Good accompanying acidity and wonderfully balanced.

Date Tasted: May 28, 2015
