Breathing this in is like walking into an opium den for wine lovers. Satin pillows of fleshy black cherry invite you to lie back, close your eyes and let your senses roam. Surely one of South Africa's finest Pinot Noir producers! Hamilton-Russell leads the way in the country for cool-climate viticulture and racy, exciting wines. Sophisticated and complex, but extremely easy to drink. Lavish fleshy ripe cherry aromas and flavours yet not simple or sweet. Complex, elegant and layered South African Pinot Noir from a master producer. Some dark spice on the finish. Silk texture. Chapter three of my second book (Unquenchable) includes a visit to this winery and dinner with the brilliant Anthony Hamilton Russell. This is easy to mistake for a top shelf Burgundian Pinot. Pair with your holiday dinners, especially those featuring roast turkey or chicken.

Pinot Noir food pairings: lamb kabobs, venison burgers, roast veal, beef Carpaccio.

Reviews and Ratings

Jon Steeves - Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Brilliant ruby with garnet hue. A wonderful Pinot Noir with racy acidity, deeply concentrated palate and well structured, medium body. Boasting a complex aromatic profile of dense red and black fruit, violet petal, aged leather, underbrush, baking spice. Long elegant finish with persistence of tart cherry, pepper and aged leather. Integrating alcohol, declared at 14% ABV. Easy to enjoy, on its own or with food. Paired well with smoked meat and aged smoked Gouda. Tasted Jan 2017. Rated 93/100. Bespoketastings.ca
Monique Sosa - Accredited Sommelier rated this wine as 93/100 with the following review:

Absolutely alluring! Black cherry, sweet baking spice, violets and cedar notes draw you in for a sip. Flavours are clean and mouthwatering showing prominent notes of cherry, dark Mayan Chocolate, minty anise - reminiscent of Australian Black Licorice - and spice. This is South African Pinot Noir is full bodied with satiny-smooth tannins, scrumptious acidity and flavour concentration, and a long finish. Overall, an outstanding expression of cool climate pinot noir. Enjoy with a juicy prime rib roast. Tasted Jan 2016 - @sommsosa / bespoketastings.ca
Jane Staples - Certified Sommelier rated this wine as 91/100 with the following review:

Elegant and silky, a luxurious Pinot Noir with fragrant cherry, vanilla, allspice and chocolate aromas. Layered palate gives delicious chocolate-covered cherry, baking spice, vanilla and oak. Smooth, satiny with a lingering cherry finish. A gift wine that will be cherished.
